“When people learn no tools of judgment and merely follow their hopes, the seeds of political manipulation are sown” (Stephen J. Gould). Big Brother, the antagonist of 1984 uses manipulation as one of their biggest tools of power. Because of this, too many people only believe in Big Brother and they cannot even remember their childhood because Big Brother has “changed” it. In 1984 there are many ways in which people are constantly manipulated by The Party such as the manipulation of public opinion, individual people, and of the war. Many would say that the every day manipulation of public opinion was The Party’s biggest weapon. The fact that everywhere Winston looked, Big Brother was using propaganda to keep The Party in his thoughts. The Party would use tele-screens to broadcast news in a way to make Big Brother and The Party correct in whatever they did. Not only were the tele-screens in every single household, but they were along shop windows as well as up and down the streets. It was nearly impossible to escape from the control of Big Brother. Along with the tele-screens, they would use public hangings to strike fear into people and to make them hate anyone who opposed Big Brother even more. Weakness can be seen in many ways, through measurement of strength or through the measurement of will power that every human possesses. Through 1984, Orwell explains to the reader that the will power is the more powerful of the two measurements. Through the manipulation in Room 101 we are shown that even though Winston has every intention to rebel against Big Brother, he has no chance to win against his biggest fear.
