In paragraph 3, Louise did not take the news as most women and not understand the fact that her husband has past and instead she accepted the fact and abruptly broke into tears. Smothered by grief Louise stormed off to her room without having anyone to follow her. In paragraph 4 and 5, Once in her room she sat down in an armchair looking out a window into the first signs of spring and the effects of physical exhaustion her husbands death set it. In paragraph 9 Louise began to feel something coming upon her and she feared it gratefully. At the time she did not know what the feeling was. Her life is defined by the accepted social ideal of a husband's will as final. She is so inured to this concept that only upon hearing the news of his death does her true feeling of something "too subtle and elusive to name" (199) come forth. This is an important tool in analyzing the meanings "between the lines" in this story. Mrs. Mallard is the main character and therefore plays the most important role in the story. This makes it necessary to examine her character in order to gain insights into the story's meaning. Several key elements relating to her personality surface in the story. These elements give insights into her feelings and her thoughts. The character analysis shows Mrs. Mallard is portrayed as insensitive, selfish and a wishful thinker.

The news of the presumed death of her husband comes as a great relief to her, and for a brief moment she experiences the joys of a liberated life from the repressed relationship with her husband. The relief, however, is short lived. The shock of seeing him alive is too much for her bear and she dies. The meaning of life and death take on opposite meaning for Mrs. Mallard in her marriage because she lacked the courage to stand up for herself.
