The less-than-lethal weapons have become a lifesaver for both the suspected criminals and the police. They allow the police to reach out to the criminals without applying deadly force on them. Some criminals may be prepared to perpetrate a heinous crime, and they may be uncontrollable in the sense that they are not in control of their behavior. The mentally ill and suspects who are under the influence of drugs fall into this category. For instance, a mentally ill person may be in possession of a pistol and he or she may be ready to fire, aiming it at another person. The police in this scenario are expected to use the less than lethal force to ensure that they do not kill the suspect as he or she requires mental help
The use of conducted energy weapons in the police force has become increasingly popular since they were introduced only a short while ago. The TASER is claimed to be the safest and most productive type of less lethal force in use today, with a very quick recovery rate and no-long term side effects. The TASER has quickly taken over the harsh use of pepper spray, the brutal force of the baton and in some cases the firearm. This essay will look into a controversial case, where a man died in the Vancouver International Airport from a direct result of multiple TASER shocks by the police. I will also discuss excited delirium and how this mysterious syndrome has created a mass of discussion and disagreements.

“Guns don’t kill people, people do.” This is a well known statement that is oftentimes considered true. However, it is not completely true. Someone who is mentally ill may be unable to make logical decisions and the perception they receive of reality may be tainted by the illness. Gun laws pertaining to those suffering mental illnesses should be more restrictive. Weapons such as guns make committing an act of violence, especially when there are multiple victims, much easier. It is difficult to assess the probability of a person to commit a violent act that harms anyone including himself/herself. Therefore, gun laws need be monitored very closely and made more consistent throughout each state in order to prevent violence that could occur in the future. To make any system effective, every state must have the same laws and regulations, as it is easy for a person to travel to a state more lenient on gun control and purchase a gun from a store that will sell firearms more openly.
A man carrying two revolvers and two 9mm semi-automatic handguns calmly strode into the Dunblane Primary School. Two people quickly spotted the firearms and tried to tackle the man; he shot them and left them wounded as he continued his journey down the hall of the school. Finally, the man reached his destination: the gym, where a class a kindergartners were having P.E. In the gym, he pulled out the guns and started picking off the five-year-olds one by one. The room was splattered with blood as young children broke like porcelain dolls under the power of the gun. The blood continued to flow, but the intruder did not stop; he took careful aim to make sure he didn't miss. The final insult came when he shot the teacher who was shielding kids with her body. Once he killed her, he killed the kids she was protecting. When he finished in the gym , he turned around walked out, shot at a class as he walked down the hall and walked out into the courtyard. In the courtyard, the killer ended the ordeal by taking his own life (Pederson).
The word assault means to make a physical attack on someone, but how does a weapon with the purpose to provide food for your family become classified as an assault weapon? Police are trained to demand control of all situations some officers even have problems separating their career life from their personal life. They "eat, live, die" police work. During my first semester of college I learned something very important in one of my political science classes. During a debate over allowing concealed carry on campuses I learned the average response time of police is over nine minutes. A massacre will be over before the police even arrive on the scene. A larger number of school massacres end because of a shoot-out with police or suicide by the mutilator. In either case the killing of innocent civilians is over before police arrive and have time to react to the situation. It is known that some attempts at extermination of a school’s inhabitants simply occur because the killer developed an appetite for masculinity or power and control over people. Allowing concealed weapons is the correct solution because the idea of people being able to defend themselves can deter a murderer. A power addicted psychopath is not going to feel very powerful or in control if there is a possibility of them being on the receiving end of a few pistols, which past students would not have been wielding, when he or she is attempting to commit an act of terrorism. Allowing the concealed carry of weapons may take the perceived power away from the irrational butcher before he or she decides to act. Rationality may be restored before lives are taken and psychiatric assistance could possibly be provided for the troubled soul. There is no guarantee that this will prevent every disturbed person from relentlessly pursuing the fear of powerless humans. The only way to stop someone like this from killing is to disarm them before he or she can accomplish slaying every one in sight.
