Internal conflict is something that happens in all of our lives almost every day, and we don’t even think about it. The definition of internal conflict is when the problem is happening to the main character and his or her self. The book The Running Dream, by Wendelin Van Draanen, has a lot of internal conflict as well as a lot of external conflict which is when the problem is happening to the main character, and some type of outside force. In this book, the main character, Jess, loves running, and on her way to one of her track meets she got into a car accident. She was taken to the hospital, and the doctors had to amputate her leg below her right knee because it was mangled beyond any chance of possible repair. Jess did not want to go, but Fiona pretty much forced to her to go. Jess ended up enjoying it, and was glad Fiona made her do that, this is an example of man vs. man external conflict. This furthers the plot because shortly after Fiona and Jess’s lunch date, Fiona wanted Jess to start coming back to school, once she realized that she was capable of doing that she decided to go along with it. This conflict shows a theme of optimism being contagious because Fiona was really excited about Jess going out for lunch with her, but Jess was not really excited about going. She did go, and then she was glad that she went, because she realized that she was able to do things that she didn’t think that she was capable of. One of the character traits shown is kindness. This is proven throughout this conflict because first, Fiona was kind enough to offer to take her out for lunch, then even though Jess did not want to go, she still did go to make Fiona happy, which seems pretty kind to
