This relation is being compared to the dictator relationship of sheep and their shepherds. In this case, Montag is the sheep and the controlling government is the shepherd. Beatty explains it as straying because similar to how sheep get out from under the strict conditions of their shepherds, occasionally people in this society try to think against and rebel the rules. Montag has gone astray and in this part of the book he is not willing to go back to work after the incident with the old woman. He realises how she provided insight towards his inner self and that she had to have died for something important. Further, this example of oppression from the book shows that the government thinks they have been successful in controlling what knowledge the people can gain, so that if no one has more sensibility than them, who will be able to oppose their decisions? Additionally, another reference to the novel that illustrates the metaphor device as a way to show oppression is when Montag talks to Faber about the rebellion. However, Faber thinks it is too late and is not willing to take the risk at first. Faber quotes: “Why waste your final hours racing about your cage denying you’re a squirrel” (68). This example of a metaphor compares the people of 451 to squirrels locked in a cage. The people have been censored from everything outside of this cage they have been pressed into, everyone the same. The author of Fahrenheit 451, through Foil, Similes, and metaphors showed to us a practical and effective way to present how the theme of oppression is being used in this novel. It shows how the government unjustly controlled its people and how the people sucked into the orders cannot think properly. People started to enjoy the sad as shown many times in the novel. If it was not for Montag, the people are not going to realise even after the war that what they were doing is wrong. Processing mass culture to think and say the same things will result in a boring, empty and gray world, people would turn to machines, doing the same every day, not rebelling orders.
In the book Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, the author used juxtaposition and imagery to draw a parallel between the two characters, Montag and Clarisse. He discusses them by placing their traits in comparison with one another to highlight their differences. In the book Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, there are many themes, symbols, and motifs that are found throughout the novel. For my journal response, I have chosen to discuss nature as a prevalent symbol in the book. The main character, Montag, lives in a society where technology is overwhelmingly popular, and nature is regarded as an unpredictable variable that should be avoided. Technology is used to repress the citizens, but the oppression is disguised as entertainment, like the TV parlour. On the opposite end of the spectrum, nature is viewed as boring and dull, but it is a way to escape the brainwashing that technology brings. People who enjoy nature are deemed insane and are forced to go into therapy. Clarisse says “My psychiatrist wants to know why I go out and hike around in the forests and watch the birds and collect butterflies,” (Bradbury 23) which shows she is a threat to the control that the government has put upon the people by enjoying nature.
In the novel, FAHRENHEIT 451 by Ray Bradbury, Guy Montag lives in an inverted society, where firemen make fires instead of put them out, and pedestrians are used as bowling pins for cars that are excessively speeding. The people on this society are hypnotized by giant wall size televisions and seashell radios that are attached to everyone’s ears. People in Montag’s society do not think for themselves or even generate their own opinions; everything is given to them by the television stations they watch. In this society, if someone is in possession of a book, their books are burned by the firemen, but not only their books, but their entire home. Montag begins realizing that the things in this society are not right. Montag is influenced and changes over the course of the novel. The strongest influences in Montag’s life are Clarisse, the burning on 11 Elm Street and Captain Beatty.
Montag is different than others around him. McGiveron said “An insanity of mindlessness” (Mcgiveron 1). This is the world Montag lives in. He is not alike his peers at all. “Montag has a conscience and a curiosity” (McGiveron 1). This shows he has a special set of traits that is rare in this society. Montag moves past things much better than those around him. When Montag is caught reading he is forced into a cruel and unusual punishment by Beatty,”Not with kerosene and a match, but piecework, with a flamethrower. Your house, your clean-up.”(Bradbury 109). “Revealing the truth is like lighting a match. It can bring light or it can set your world on fire” (Sydney Rogers). In other words revealing the truth hurts and it can either solve things or it can make them much worse. This quote relates to Fahrenheit 451 because Montag was hiding a huge book stash, and once he revealed it to his wife, Mildred everything went downhill. Our relationships are complete opposites. There are many differences between Fahrenheit 451 and our society, they just have a different way of seeing life.

Light, especially fire, and darkness are significantly reoccurring themes in Fahrenheit 451. Guy Montag, the main character, is a fireman, but in this futuristic world the job description of a fireman is to start fires wherever books are found; instead of putting them out. Montag takes a journey from a literary darkness to a knowledgeable light. This journey can be compared to the short story Allegory of the Cave by Plato, in which a prisoner experiences a similar journey. An example of light, in reference to knowledge, occurs just after Montag meets Clarisse for the first time. "When they reached her house all its lights were blazing" (9). Since Montag had rarely seen that many house lights on, I interpreted those lines as saying "that house is full of knowledge and enlightenment; not like the rest of the houses around here which are always dark." Clarisse went on to explain to Montag that her mother, father, and uncle were just sitting around and talking. This was also something that wasn't very commonplace in the city. Fire is an important element of symbolism in Fahrenheit 451. Fire consumes minds, spirits, men, ideas, and books. Fire plays two very different roles in this book. The role of a destructive, devouring, and life ending force, and the role of a nourishing flame.

Despite these different endings, both authors, through merely ink and paper, warned of, and could have helped prevented a world filled filled with hate, ignorance, and misery.
