What is a home? What is a house? A home is often known as a house. A house can often reflect much about the people who live in it or those who own it. This is demonstrated in the novel The Great Gatsby written by F. Scott Fitzgerald. The characters’ personalities, including their attitudes, beliefs, and values, are reflected by the houses they own. To begin with, the houses in The Great Gatsby reflect their owners attitudes. For example, Gatsby’s house is large, bright, and often holding parties filled with uninvited guests. This tells us that Gatsby is a careless, wealthy character. Nick’s attitude is also reflected by the house he owns. With Nick’s house being smaller and overlooked compared to the other characters’ houses in the story it reflects on how Nick is different from the other characters. If you take a look at Gatsby in the story you see that his house reflects his beliefs. This is true because the reason Gatsby bought the house that he owns is to be next to Daisy. Gatsby believes that Daisy still loves him and that he can win her heart with his wealth and success. This is also why he throws these fantastic parties in belief that Daisy will come to one. Nick’s beliefs of being kind to others, careful, and non judgemental of strangers is reflected by his house being small, less expensive and decorated when compared to his neighbors, his grass not being cut, and the untidiness of his house. The parties that Tom holds inside his house are small and only made up of invited guests, and the inside Tom’s house reflects how Tom believes that he is superior and how he is abusive to women. This can be seen when Tom answers call from his mistress during dinner, when he proclaims how great a racist book is, and how he treats Daisy, Myrtle, and
