In the short story, "The Cask of Amontillado" by Edgar Allan Poe, the narrator named Montresor seeks revenge on a character named Fortunato for hurting and insulting him. The author uses many different types of literary devices to give off a careless and hateful tone. Some of the main literary devices he uses are irony and foreshadowing. To begin with, one of the devices he uses is foreshadowing. An example would be when Fortunato says to Montresor, "I shall not die of a cough"(poe) and Montresor responds, "True"(poe). By Montresor saying this, he knows that he can die many other ways, besides being sick. By him knowing this, this shows that he is careless of Fortunato dying because he hates him so much.
