Environmental racism is the deterioration of minority’s environment by intentional placement of pollution. It can be detrimental to health, it disproportionately impacts groups of people, most of all is marked by hazards from various pollution sources. From these reasons you can easily see that environmental racism is not kind subject.
To start off environmental racism is detrimental to health, for example “many sources of pollution (refineries, landfills/dumps, waste management centers, injection wells, power-plants ) release chemicals that have been linked to impaired brain development such as “lead, mercury, magnesium, and polychlorinated biphenyl’s (Kay and Katz, 2012).” As you can see the health of individuals is being negatively impacted by environmental racism.
Furthermore, environmental racism disproportionately impacts groups of people. For instance “… lived a tenuous existence on the outer edge of the city’s industrial vision, trapped at the bottom of the economic and social hierarchy.” The text used tells that people that lived on the outer edge of the city had to move a lot and were short on money and a comfortable place to live. The author uses “more than 80% of the county’s releases come from it’s four oil refineries within 20 miles of Richmond – Chevron, Tesoro refining and marketing co. and Shell oil products in Martinez” to show that even popular oil refinery companies are actually the ones producing the most pollution and making it hard to live. Also as stated in the article “ one in four Richmond residents live in areas of high air pollution from nearby industries or busy roadways.” This text taken from the article shows that Richmond is being pounded by various pollutants in their everyday
