Environmental racism is the deterioration of minority’s environment by intentional placement of pollution. It can be detrimental to health, it disproportionately impacts groups of people, most of all is marked by hazards from various pollution sources. From these reasons you can easily see that environmental racism is not kind subject.
To start off environmental racism is detrimental to health, for example “many sources of pollution (refineries, landfills/dumps, waste management centers, injection wells, power-plants ) release chemicals that have been linked to impaired brain development such as “lead, mercury, magnesium, and polychlorinated biphenyl’s (Kay and Katz, 2012).” As you can see the health of individuals is being negatively impacted by environmental racism.
Furthermore, environmental racism disproportionately impacts groups of people. For instance “… lived a tenuous existence on the outer edge of the city’s industrial vision, trapped at the bottom of the economic and social hierarchy.” The text used tells that people that lived on the outer edge of the city had to move a lot and were short on money and a comfortable place to live. The author uses “more than 80% of the county’s releases come from it’s four oil refineries within 20 miles of Richmond – Chevron, Tesoro refining and marketing co. and Shell oil products in Martinez” to show that even popular oil refinery companies are actually the ones producing the most pollution and making it hard to live. In David Schmidtz’s article “Are All Species Equal?” he discusses species egalitarianism and if it has any application or standing in the philosophical discussion of environmental ethics. One of the given arguments equates speciesism to racism. These two terms, down to their basic definitions, are so fundamentally different that it is difficult to compare them. Racism is the discrimination of a race of people based on the culture, physical features and tone of speech, among other things.

The first think that I see when I walk outside everyday is the layer of haze that looms across the Wasatch Front. It doesn’t surprise me that The American Lung Association gave Salt Lake City an F, on our “State of the Air” report card. (American Lung Association,2013).What companies are the biggest contributor to our pollution? Should our children suffer the consequences of pollution? There are many causes and effects of pollution along the Wasatch Front, which includes large industrial companies, commercial companies and household pollution.
Individual Racism- the belief that one’s own race is superior to another (racial prejudice) and behavior that suppresses members of the so called inferior race (racial discrimination). An example of individual racism in the scenario is Ms. Welch's description of how Native Indian children were taken from their communities and placed in schools away from their families. This was done in with the belief by the White European culture was superior and the desire to drive out the Native Indian traditions in future generations.
For example, the people of color are more likely to live in a polluted area than a person who is white. This is racist because the people of color are put in a bad area just because they are of color. In his article entitled The "environmental racism" Hoax, white male, David Friedman explains his disbelief in the existence of environmental racism. He argues that the Environmental Protection Agency’s efforts to prevent environmental injustice make it too difficult to push business projects through in urban areas. Therefore business efforts, “shift operations to white, politically conservative, less-developed locations,” to avoid complications with EPA requirements (Friedman). Moving industrial facilities to predominantly white areas creates jobs and economic growth in these areas rather than in areas with larger colored populations. Therefore, it could be seen that the EPA’s efforts ironically counteract their purpose of protecting colored communities. This view attributes for lack of industrial plants in urban areas, but fails to consider the relationship between environmental horrors such as Hurricanes Katrina, Irma, and Jose, DAPL, and the Flint Water Crisis. This is portrayed in the film, starting out in the community of Norco and Diamond, which respectively contain majority Caucasian (which are financially thriving) and African American (which are financially declining) people. Near the homes of these citizens, a Shell refinery is located which releases chemicals in the air and this negatively impacts the health of these residents. However, the difference in opinion of the health impact is clearly seen between residents of Norco and Diamond. In Norco, many of the citizens have either worked or work for Shell refinery and deny that any adverse health effects were caused by this company. On the other hand, the citizens of Diamond voiced their concerns about what chemicals the air contained, along with the adverse health impacts. Concerns that arose include the impact on health, how the pollution is affected the community, the types of chemicals that were inhaled, economic conditions, etc. The Shell company tried to propose a solution by buying out two out of the four streets, however, this is a smaller community, which means by doing this then families would be separated and left in this community that is still polluted. Environmental racism is starting to get attention in the Florida legislature. Low-income; minority ; Blacks ; Hispanics / Latinos ; Asians ; Philippines ; Latin American ; factory owners ; people with money. Environmental racism is something that affects black minority and low-income people around the world. “The state of Florida needs to take at the factors that have caused this”. What this is is that the toxic waste the polluted Florida needs to be checked out.
We have a long history of racism in America that has been structured to favor White people. Structural racism can be defined as, “a system in which public policies, institutional practices, cultural representations, and other norms work in various, often reinforcing ways to perpetuate racial group inequity. It identifies the dimensions of our history and culture that have allowed privileges associated with “whiteness” and disadvantages associated with “color” to endure and adapt over time”(Structural Racism, 2004,p. 11). Overt racism became illegal during The Civil Rights Movement that took place between 1954-1968 (Tuck, 2015). Although society seemed to be heading toward a more socially acceptable society, the movement enabled white people to blame the struggles black face as a character flaw. White people will believe that black people have a lot of problems because their culture is bad or they have bad values. Racism is commonly thought of as an act that is synonymous with violence; however, one common form of racism, environmental racism, often takes place without people being aware the events are happening before detrimental activities have been put into action. In Melissa Checker’s book Polluted Promises, she relates that Reverend Dr. Benjamin F. Chavis Jr. coined the term environmental racism while stating that there is “deliberate targeting of communities of color for toxic waste disposal and the siting of polluting industries” (Checker 14). Within all of the texts mentioned, the theme of racism is present, just like in most of today’s societies. All of the researched sources deal with the effects of racism, the foolishness of it and the fact that it still exists in today’s modern and so-called advanced world. No matter how much social attitudes evolve, prejudice, hatred and racism will still exist within aspects of society, whether it be in the heart, in the mind or in the souls of those too ignorant to realize the damaging consequences. While technologically today’s world has advanced, if society cannot overcome issues such as racism and prejudice, it has not evolved at all.
Racist and racism are provocative words in American society. To some, they become curse words. They are descriptive words of reality that cannot be denied. Some people believe that race is the primary determinant of human abilities and capacities and behave as if racial differences produce inherent superiorities. People of color are often injured by these judgements and actions whether they are directly or indirectly racist. Just as individuals can act in racist ways, so can institutions. Institutions can be overtly or inherently racist. Institutions can also injure people. The outcome is nonetheless racist, if not intentional (Randall).
Ecotopia: Equality among Apartheid and Racism The “issue” of race has been around for as long as people could see differences in one another. Even in the most civilized countries it sometimes manages to become a way of life. In the book Ecotopia, by Ernest Callenbach, America has been succeeded by the States Washington, Oregon, and Northern California, to form the country of Ecotopia. The society of Ecotopia revolves around recycling, getting back to a cleaner earth, letting emotion fuel everyday living, and many other non-traditional ways and practices that the typical American would be shocked by.
