Perfection is perceived in many different ways in this world. As one person may see an Utopia, others see it as a dystopia. Utopia is defined as, “a placed of ideal perfection especially in laws, government and social conditions” (“Utopia”). The opposite, dystopia is defined as, “an imaginary place where people lead dehumanized and often fearful lives” (“Dystopia”). In the book 1984 by George Orwell, the citizens are told that everything is perfectly fine and protected by Big Brother. Everyone thinks they live in an utopia but soon realizes the lies within their society, making it a dystopia. Just like 1984, the Sewer Gang of Bucharest, Romania have similar characteristics. Oceania is surrounded by telescreens that watch the townspeople. Most citizens have telescreens watching their every move even while in their house. One would explain that, “The telescreen received and transmitted simultaneously. Any sound Winston made, above the level of a very low whisper, would be picked up by it; moreover, so long as he remained within the field of vision which the metal plaque commanded, he could be seen as well as heard” (Orwell 3). Telescreens and the thought police enable the people to have privacy and control their every move. No one is safe in Oceania from anything because someone is always watching. Something that is also restricted is independent thought. No local can write or think about something that goes against what the party wants. Winston dealt with this problem: “The thing that he was about to do was to open a diary. This was not illegal (nothing was illegal, since there were no longer any laws), but if detected it was reasonably certain that it would be punished by death, or at least by twenty-five years in a forced- labor camp” (Orwell 6). The government makes it known that if people commit thoughtcrime they will be vaporized.
