HUCKLEBERRY FINN ASSIGNMENT PT. 1 Diction: informal illiterate simple Huck’s diction throughout the book was a combination of informal, illiterate, and simple. He was very illiterate because his grammar and spelling was always way off, some examples are “setting”, “ain’t”, “nor one of them”, etc. I think his illiteracy added meaning to the novel because it gave the audience a representation of his personality. He hated the fact that Widow Douglas wanted to civilize him and hated school and that was shown through his illiteracy. The novel was informal because of the illiteracy. Twain probably used a lot of similes because it was Huck’s way of expressing what the situation was like. He wasn’t very literate as mentioned before so he couldn’t use big adjectives to describe the situation, instead he’d use similes. The similes added meaning because they allowed for better comprehension from the readers. The readers were able to understand what Huck was trying to depict. Syntax: short, choppy Twain’s syntax was short and choppy throughout the whole novel. It added meaning to the novel because Huck really hated the idea of being smart and civilized and that was demonstrated through his short choppy sentences. It wouldn’t make sense if he used long complex sentences. Irony: Jim ran away because he heard he was going to be sold to New Orleans since Ms. Watson needed money. Jim running away was ironic to me because although he did it to possibly buy his family, him becoming a runaway slave would not allow him to ever see his family again because if he got caught he’d be in big trouble and to not get in trouble he’d have to be
