1. Deviance- A violation of social norms.
A good example of deviance in the movie “Crash” would be when the gun shop owner refused to sell the persian man a gun. As a social norm that as a gun shop owner you are supposed to sell your product to anyone licensed. He violated this norm because the persian man could not understand him.
2. Differential Association- When an opportunity to commit a crime or any deviant behavior arises due to a relationship with friends or family.
An example of Differential Association in the movie “Crash” would be best described to Ludacris’s friend who, to me, does not seem as if he would do the crime on his own. This shows that there friendship may go way back due to the area they live in. As friends

Crime- A deviant act that is a violation of social set laws from the government.
In the movie crash the example of crime is shown more than often. Specifically when Ludacris and his friend would rob cars and turn them to chop shops for self profit. This is the best example because, obviously, in America everyone's belongings are protected from being taken by others by the judicial system.
4. Sexual Harassment- An unwanted sexual progression either physically or verbally.
In the movie the police officer that pulls over Terrence Howard and his wife tells them to step out of the car. After searching Terrence Howard he then searches his wife. But in the process sexually harassed her by grabbing her inappropriately. This is the best example of sexual harassment in the movie “Crash”.
5. Hate Crime- A crime committed against a person because of that person's background or history.
In the movie “Crash” there is a Persian man that owns a convenience store. In the movie his convenience story get ransacked and vandalised due to social ignorant linkage to Iranians. They destroy everything in the store which shows that it is not a crime due to profit out of it but did it out of strong

Ethnicity- a group of people that share cultural characteristics.
In the movie “Crash” they have a widespread amount of different ethnics. You have Brendan Fraser and Sandra Bullock as the Caucasians, Ludacris and his friend as Blacks, The hispanic Locksmith and his family as hispanics, the asian couple, and the persian family.
8. Achieved Status- A status that is worked for.
In the movie “Crash” an example of Achieved Status is Brendan Fraser's character. In the movie he shows favoritism towards the blacks to get a vote for a position higher in the judicial system. This shows the decision he had to make in order to achieve the likelihood of his voters.
9. Family- A group of people that reside within the same home.
An example of Family from the movie “Crash” is every characters home and people that live with him. The hispanic Locksmith has his family with his daughter and i’d assume wife and you see how their relationship is so emotionally attached because they are a family.
10. Labeling Theory- A self taught response to a certain skin color or race based on their racial background or popular
Deviance is described as “the recognized violation of cultural norms”(Macionis 238). While deviance can include crime, it is not always such. Deviance can mean trying to sneak into a hospital room, desperately searching for someone like the character of Benny in the movie Benny and Joon. Or it could be preforming on the streets for people to watch. Deviance isn’t always a criminal act. The movie Benny and Joon gave several examples of deviant behavior portrayed by the three main characters, Benny, Joon, and Sam.
indirect association and identification with more distant reference groups” (Social Learning theory, 2016). Any human being that an individual has direct or indirect contact with, has the ability to influence social learning. These influences can be positive or negative and have a direct correlation with criminal and non-criminal behaviour. There are two major forms of association, primary and secondary (Cochran & Sellers, 2017). Family and friends are considered primary associations, and other individuals such as neighbors, teachers and church groups are considered secondary associations (Social Learning theory, 2016). Studies show that learning criminal behavior occurs mostly within the primary groups, but may also be influenced by secondary associations. Akers also recognizes that the timing, length, frequency and nature of the contact influence behaviour (Social Learning theory, 2016). For example, if a child spends a large portion of each day with friends who misbehave, the child has a greater chance of misbehaving as
Differential association theory was founded by Edwin H. Sutherland (Lilly, 2012, p. 43). This theory states that “any person will inevitably come into contact with definitions favorable to violation of the law and with definitions unfavorable to violation of the law” (Lilly, 2012, p. 44). Whichever definition is more prominent in a person’s mind, will lead to their decision of “whether the person embraces crime as an acceptable way of life” (Lilly, 2012, p. 44). Sutherland composed nine propositions that explained the theory. He explained that “crime is learned through the process of differential association” (Lilly, 2012, p. 45). The nine propositions explained that “criminal behavior is learned” (Lilly, 2012, p. 45). He explained that by communicating with others, especially those that are close to them they are more likely to pick up behaviors from those people. Differential association theory also explains that learning criminal behaviors “involves all the mechanisms that are involved in any other learning” (Lilly, 2012, p. 45). While learning a criminal behavior one not only learns “the techniques of committing the crime” but also the “specific direction of motives, drives, rationalizations, and attitudes” involved with crime (Lilly, 2012, p. 45). This is theory is shown throughout the book when the young Mr. Moore was influenced by the life of crime that was present in his
Much of society mistakenly interchanges the two concepts of crime and deviance, assuming that they are one in the same. "A crime is what the law proclaims it to be, and is an act punishable by law" (Winterdyk 9). Deviance, on the other hand, is a contested concept; it can be defined as differing from a norm or accepted standard of society (dictionary.com). Deviance involves acts that fluctuate from social norms; although such actions can be, they are not necessarily against the law (Winterdyk 9).
1 Differential associated is the idea that crime is learned through communication and social interaction. In the movie Let if fall: Los Angeles 1982-1992 described the role of the Los Angeles police department being aggressive to the African American community. Early on in the film it described the training and power dynamic that existed between supposed criminals in minority communities and the police Department. An example given was the fear of PCP intoxicated individuals and the theoretical powers it gave them as criminals, being able to withstand non-violent ways to reducing conflict like Tasers, and pepper spray. This fear of PCP intoxicated criminals made the Los Angeles police department mistrustful, and wary of all future criminals
Differential association is a learning theory that focuses on how people learn to commit crime. Associating with antisocial peers is a major cause of crime. In the movie, differential association was depicted when Derek associated himself with the Neo-Nazi group; he began living a deviant lifestyle by destroying a grocery store that was owned by an immigrant from Korea.
In the first scene we observe a Muslim man inside a firearm store, attempting to buy a gun. The owner is a white Caucasian male that presents a negative attitude towards the customer because of his Muslim background. This feeling triggers in the owner, negative attitudes based on the assimilation and stereotypes with the Muslim race. Being immediately associated with the Al Qaeda terrorist group, which was responsible for suicidal bombers that have killed thousand of Americans.
In the end all three theories of sociological deviance that I talked about explain the deviant behavior that I was partaking in. I feel that the one that fits the act the most is differential association. The reason that I feel this is that I do not feel that I would have participated in this behavior if it was not for the individuals I was hanging out with at the time.
Deviance is the behavior and the standards of expectations of a group or society. It is also behavior that is considered dangerous, threatening or offensive. The people that are deviant are often labeled to be weirdos, oddballs, or creeps. In the United States, people with tattoos, drug addicts, alcoholics, and compulsive gamblers are all considered deviant. Sociologists believe that everybody is deviant from time to time. They believe each person will violate a social norm in certain situations. People are considered deviant if they don't stand for the national anthem at a sports event, dress casually to a fancy restaurant, or skip classes. One category of deviance is Crime. Crime is a violation of norms that have been formally enacted into a law. Another category of deviance is humorous. Deviance is relative, what is deviant in one group or society may not be deviant in another group or society.
Becker theorised that the term 'deviant' is applied when an actor (individual) violates the mores and values created by society. The label deviant is usually applied by a figure of authority or high social status, and provokes a negative social reaction. The same reaction that can be associated to an act of law breaking. Society struggles to differentiate between 'crime' and 'deviance',The two words are sometimes used interchangeably. Crime is an act that breaks 'criminal law'; resulting in formal punishment, whereas deviance is simply an act that is perceived as 'wrong'.
Society has for a long time made rules that if breached will create deviance or criminality. As described by Howard S. Becker in his book Outsiders: Studies in the Sociology of Deviance, “the deviant is one to whom the label has successfully been applied; deviant behavior is behavior that people so label”. This is a common process that each and every one of us uses as a way to classify an individual. When someone...
In movie "Crash" it's about a large mixture of people of different race in Los Angeles, California and also how people all intermix with one in another. In the film Crash there are many characters that starts to change their strategy throughout the film. However, there was one character in the movie that has changed the most that was Sandra Bullock who played Jean Cabot.
Deviance is not the quality of the act a person commits but rather a consequence of the application by others of rules and sanctions to an offender. The deviant is one to whom that label has successfully been applied; deviant behaviour is behaviour that people so label.
Deviance is a diversion of an accepted societal behaviour; these can be seen in both positive and negative ways. Without deviance we would not have social change, thus leading to an overall block within the culture we live upon today. Deviance is able to range from a variety of aspects, this can include something simple such as going faster than the speed limit or something more complex such as murder or vandalism. The definition of deviance is determined by the individual’s society they live upon.
