Cultural Competence is about understanding the interrelatedness of cultural concepts. The nurse used the knowledge, and skills necessary for providing quality care to the Hispanic lung cancer patient. Leininger 's Sunrise Model represents her theory of cultural care diversity and universality. Cultural care diversity includes the differences in values and permitted models of medical care between different groups of people.

Better habits then form by doing repetitive tasks. The nurse then has to freeze the behaviors and habits of the patient which makes it harder for them to go back to their old ones. Because the patient smoked for 24 years, he was unable to quit even though he tried. His routine settled in in such a way that the patient was forced to smoke as a habit. The nurse has to make patient gain perspective on their day-to-day activities, unlearn their bad habits, and open up to new ways of reaching their objectives. The nurse recognized the patient’s strengths and weaknesses, his being his lack of understanding English, while promoting participation in a teaching/learning plan. First the nurse assesses the patient to figure out not only what needs to be taught, but also how the patient will best understand the information. The nurse assessed the patient’s sensory abilities (vision, hearing and tactile sensation), cognitive functions, and literacy level to evaluate in order to teach cognitive and psychomotor skills and to set realistic goals with the patient.
