Beowulf is a Danish poem written in 800 by a silent writer. In the poem, Beowulf is seen as a hero due to many heroic traits. One of Beowulf’s traits is courage. A prime example of Beowulf’s courage is when Beowulf arrives at Hrothgar's hall full of stories about his valor and his prowess in battle, later on in the novel Beowulf fully backs up the men. Beowulf also shows courage in his fabled swimming match against Breca. "I have heard moreover that the monster scorns in his reckless way to use weapons; therefore, to heighten Hygelac's fame and gladden his heart, I hereby renounce sword and the shelter of the broad shield, the heavy war-board: hand-to-hand is how it will be, a life-and-death fight with the fiend" (433-440). This quote shows the courage and strength of Beowulf in the way it is described with the reckless use of weapons. Making a villain with villain qualities in Beowulf is done with many uses. The first example of a villain characteristics is done by the physical appearance of Grendel: Grendel is big and has enormous strength. The first paragraph critics discussed what the film visually looked like but not how society has taken it in. The second paragraph discussed how Grendel isn't really a real monster but is misunderstood; leading to the discussion of how humans can be real monsters.
