Chivalry is a huge and consist theme in Sir Thomas Mallory’s fifteenth century work on, Le Morte d’ Arthur. One of the greatest knights in this story that portrays chivalry is Lancelot. Although Lancelot embodies chivalry he also challenges it in some of the things that he does. Lancelot fails in a certain aspect in chivalry because he is unable to restore his loyalty to the king, King Arthur, and his oath that he made to respect his wife, Guenevere. Lancelot’s failure is represented throughout the story when he can not find a way to uphold both chivalry and courtly love.
A lot of women nowadays use the phrase, “chivalry is dead”. Many women use it because they have seen a man not open the car door for her or have heard about a man lacking manners. The phrase came from the medieval times and usually associated with knights. Knights were supposed to act chivalrous in almost everything they did. They had to have loyalty to their king, have honor for their religion, and be faithful to their suitors or wives. …show more content…

The first time I saw an example of chivalry was when he was captured by four women of the Castell Charyot. While he is captured the four women try to force him to pick one of them to marry. Because Lancelot chose neither of the four, he showed his loyalty by refusing them, “Yet had I lever dye in this preson with worshyp than to have one of you to my paramoure, ”
