For this critical assignment i was given the job to listen to specific songs and give my input on them .I honestly was very excited about this assignment because i love listening to music, i especially was curious to see whether these songs would make it to my own personal playlist. My grandparents used to tell me that songs always have an underlying meaning, listening to them long enough can actually influence someone to partake in those activities. For instance, people who listen to violent rap music may have an inner feeling or subliminal thought to want to smoke weed, or gang bang. I also came up with the idea that majority of the time the type of music people listen to also corresponds with who they present themselves to be or who they inspire to be.
The song i chose to listen to was Syd Barrett simply because I've always seen people wearing the shirts and talked about their music so i thought it would be a great idea to listen to them first. The album Madcap laughs, barrett , Mask replica was

Judging solely off the cover photo he looked as if he was going to commit suicide or like he had just took a heap ton of drugs and was patiently waiting to fall over in the corner. This actually was the impression that i got when i heard it except instead of him finding himself he found comfort in drugs. The song was surprisingly short which at first kind of made it hard to actually grasp an understanding of it. It was evident that he was talking about a woman but i think that instead of him comparing a woman to being like a drug he actually compared the drug to being the woman. Something that his very being wouldn't be able to live without. I truly was puzzled with this song, honestly i believed that perhaps i was over analyzing

Music preference has a large impact on our everyday lives, whether it is music we choose to listen to, the song on a television commercial, or the song that comes on the radio while driving to and from work. The age-old question of whether music preference determines behavior or behavior determines music preference then comes into question. The type of music listened to can be a determinant of behavior. Our behaviors then lead to associations with the song and the associations, whether good or bad, then lead to whether or not the m...
Music and what lyrics are placed in songs has had a lot of influence over my emotions not only when I listen to the song but when I think about the event that goes with that song. In this day and age music and media have more power to manipulate young minds than it did only a generation ago. The songs that people say are deep and meaningful are usually those that are easy to connect with. The six songs you have listened to are songs most people do not understand until they analyze the meanings of them. My own mother in fact does not like the music I listen to just because of the language and because she tends to see things as they are instead of the feelings and motivations poured into something.
It is difficult to show the effects of music on the individual, but it is easy to see how the individual chooses genres of music based on mood. The soldiers in Iraq, for instance, listened to a song by the band Drowning Pool titled, “Let the Bodies Hit the Floor,” over the speakers in their tanks. After listening to the song it would be easy to see that they didn’t just choose the song because they thought it pertained to their current situation. The song is loud, fast, and hard. The song fueled the soldiers. I don’t think that it made them into bloodthirsty savages, but I do think that it pumped them up with adrenaline. Walk into any random Gold’s Gym and I’m sure you will not hear classical or new age music, but instead some sort of rock. David in the Bible played music to soothe Saul. Due to David’s harp and voice Saul calmed down and fell asleep. This is present even in today’s society. After work, school, or any other long, exhausting event, it isn’t uncommon for people to go home and put on some soothing music in order to cure them of their horrible day.
The human brain, through evolution, has developed reasoning tactics that cause us to think thoroughly before we act. Researchers say music is powerful- but just not powerful enough to cause people to act out in certain scenarios, such as fights and killings. I refute this argument by simply stating that music does have a powerful effect on people, all the time, almost anywhere. For example, if music can give us a boost while working out in the gym, or influence our first date, then it can also have the power to affect our choices when we are in a bad mood, possible more than enough to even commit a crime. "Because music is at the center of the formation of cultural identity for marginalized youth, it 's very powerful," Professor Williams explains. "So now you have kids growing up listening to the music and feeling that the music is expressing who they are as young, African-American males. This is bigger than participating in a gang. It is the core of your value system."(Guarino 1). In Oklahoma, a teen named James Edwards killed an Australian baseball player out of what he claims was boredom, after listening to Chief Keef 's drill music. Today, more teens and young adults are listening to extremely violent music, causing them to forget what is reality and what is fiction. This false sense of reality is giving kids a boosted ego, giving themselves a higher popularity
Music defines our culture. As Americans, we listen to music while we drive our cars, are at work, doing housework, studying, etc. We have songs for special occasions: Christmas, Hanukah, birthdays, weddings, parties, etc. We have taken songs from the various cultures that make us diverse: Arabic, German, Mexican, Native American, etc. We have many genres: country, hip-hop, rap, pop, blues, jazz, rock, heavy metal, etc. And although we may think of music as simple and easy, looking at all this makes one realize how diverse and complex our music truly is. Two things that contribute to this diversity are theme and symbolism.
Music offers a soundtrack for life. It has the power to, "to elevate the mind, body and character of individuals and the spirit of the nation as a whole" (Suisman 19). Along with its profound effect on people, music is also derived from endless sources and contains an infinite number of messages and purposes within its given context. Musical genres are often created to standalone as their own entity, but songs are also sometimes intended to represent multiple influences and alternate styles. As exemplified through the examination of various musical genres, their origins and their historical implications, a persisting influence relates to either the stylistic inspiration from other cultures, ethnicities and musical styles or the blatant conflict
Music are a few things we tend to hear every day. Whether or not it’s from our own ipods, in our cars, or background music to our lives. A song exists for pretty much every feeling and music will be thought of as extremely healing mechanism. Over the years there are various varieties of music that everyone embrace completely different beats, sounds, and evoke different emotions. Such varieties of music is hip hop and rap, alternative music, and rock and roll music. Music incorporates a long line and every single sound and sort of music is tangled together inside each other and influenced by each other. For these reasons, music not solely defines a sort of sound, however additionally recreates lifestyles and defines entire generations. The ability of music will be seen from all differing kinds of music.
Music can take on many meaning and there are many forms of music that come in different languages through out the world. So is it reasonable to conclude that music does affect a person mood and personality through out his or her life. Despite the fact the music play such an important role in a person life, there are still people that do not care about the art the cultural behind different type of music that we experience in everyday life. In his podcasts, “Why Do Listeners Enjoy Music that Makes them Weep?” professor David Huron talk about how his research of psychology help him related to the study of humanities which could be connect to the understanding of systematic musicology in a human mind. With this idea we as listeners can engage it with the different way that people can interact with music in their life and understand more about what cause the mood and emotion that a person feel when they experience music.
Music is a form of entertainment for many people. It has the ability to affect our emotions whether that be making us happy, sad, or just mellow.. It can even cause us to alter physically in some fashion.. Music can have an overwhelming outcome on the emotional, social, intellectual, and physical status of an individual. However, I think that music has the biggest impact on the emotional state of a person. Music can provoke emotions such as: depression, misery and joy. There are several different aspects of music that contribute to how a song is interpreted. Among them is the tempo, which is the speed of the song. If a song is sad, the tempo is often slower. If a song is meant to be happy, the tempo is quick and upbeat. If the motive of the song is to bring about fear, it is either extremely slow, or grave and can transition to allegro which is a quicker tempo and can get the adrenaline pumping. Another factor of interpretation is the key it is in. A key is, “a particular scale or system of tones” (Dictionary.com). There are 24 different keys in music; 12 major keys and 12 minor keys. Each key can be put together in some form or fashion to create a tune that appeals to a different
In fact, many songs have very important social messages that adolescents take away with them. An example of this is the song ‘Same Love’ by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis. It is a widely known fact that homosexuality has been a controversial issue since the beginning of time and still is considered one today. Although more socially accepted now than ever before in history, it is still viewed as a negative thing today and many people are against homosexuality. “Same Love” speaks for LGBT people all around the world with some very powerful lyrics. These lyrics explain how LGBT people are still discriminated against just for the mere purpose of loving someone of the same gender. For instance, in “Same Love”, Macklemore states how we live in ‘a world so hateful, some would rather die than be who they are’. This explains how LGBT individuals feel like they cannot express themselves and love who they love, all because of what? Something written in a book? This really shows how cruel the world we live in is. On the other hand, the lyrics also talk about how homosexual people cannot change who they are, for they were born this way and there should not be anything wrong with the way they live. Macklemore did an amazing job with this song. Thus, influencing youth on how they view LGBT people in a positive way, by showing teenagers how we are all equal. Moving on, other issues that artists rap about a lot is police
Although some may say that music doesn’t directly affect the way a person acts, there has been evidence to prove that it does in fact change emotions and the way people act. Music heavily influences a person’s mindset by shaping what they place value on in the world or what they might hold dear. Music also tends to affect people’s persona and how they portray themselves to the world. Certain types of music are associated with certain demographics of people. For example, hip hop music is usually associated with the black community, and black men and women have strong connections with its songs and lyrics. Objectifying hip hop music
Music according to Merriam Webster dictionary can be defined as “the science and art of ordering tones in succession, combination, and in temporal relationships to produce having unity and continuity. The dictionary made me understand that for music to be meaningful, it must have an agreeable sound. Music depicts a lot of information, ideas, knowledge and importantly feelings. People who make or produce music definitely have a way they feel before they begin to sing or before they make a decision to sing. A popular musician, Bob Marley said, “one good thing about music, when it hits you, you feel no pain.” The familiarity of a song can determine the way you feel about the song. Familiarity plays a great role, it underpins our engagement with
Music is meant to entertain, and impress listeners and also cause listeners to feel certain emotions, or just affect their moods in general. Most music strives for that in one way or another. Rap, in general gives messages of partying, fighting, having sex and being rich. These messages generally make listeners happy, energized and occasionally, rebellious. Country music often has messages of country living, break-ups and love. These messages usually cause listeners to feel nostalgic or slightly melancholic. Metal also spreads it's own messages to listeners. Some of the most common are individuality, living in the present moment, and freedom. These cause listeners to feel energetic, motivated and different. These can be quite appealing feelings to those that feel misunderstood, depressed, angry and unmotivated.
