What Chevy did in the 2014 “Maddie” commercial, is brilliant. The various reasons Maddie is more effective than not, are abundant. If someone were to be watching that on live television, they would have no idea who the ad was for until the end. The effectiveness comes in its subtleness. There are multiple factors that must come into account while determining effect, but I’ll begin with the branding. Here Chevy takes the emotional route, tugging on every animal lovers (especially women’s) heartstrings. In our textbook The Bare Bones it states that “The more intimate the relationship between the target and the brand, the less likely it is to be affected by competitive promotions.” This ad is a textbook example of that statement. Instead of modeling all the cool features Chevy cars have, they play the “sad card” that makes their commercial so much more memorable because its target market wants to cry every time they view it. During the ad viewers have no clue what is being advertised but once you realize it’s Chevy, the ad becomes less about the relationship between the women and her dog, Maddie, but more about how the car has always been that constant variable, always there for her. Through the women in the ad’s entire life, she has had that dog by her side, but she also had that Chevy. The tagline at the end of the ad is “A best friend for life’s journey”, Chevy wanted the message that through thick and thin, Chevy won’t be the object that makes you upset, and on the contrary-it’s the item that you can depend on for never making you sad.
