Exam 1: Drug and Alcohol Abuse
Drugs and alcohol abuse affects a student physically, mentally, and emotionally, and can lead to academic issues in many ways. One of the ways a student’s physical health is affected is that they often experience irregular eating habits leading to poor nutrition. They also are more fatigued. The use of cannabis in particular can cause very negative effects on an adolescent. Mentally the student can become filled with anxiety and paranoia (Kedzior, 16). The use of cannabis in has also been proven to decrease cognitive function and IQ. The decrease in IQ was not due to academic laziness but rather a physical change in the brain (Meier, 2658). …show more content…

There are ten components of wellness that interlock to create an overall health for an individual. Each component leads to five main forms of wellness. The ten components are health education, physical education and physical activity, nutrition environment and services, health services, counseling psychological and social services, social and emotional climate, physical environment, employee wellness, family engagement, and community involvement. The five main goals of wellness influenced by these components are for the individual to be healthy, safe, engaged, supportive, and challenged. Understanding how health is important to life and applying these aspects are crucial to academic success. Community is the largest influence on an individual’s wellness. Being involved in a community can strengthen emotional and social needs, and for children, especially for those who may not a have a strong family life. Employee wellness can help those in secondary school who may be employed for the first time. If safety procedures are not put in place and enforced, the adolescent may be seriously harmed or even killed.
