In William Golding's Lord of the Flies evil develops when kids who have spent their whole lives under civilization and safety are suddenly ripped from that with a plane crash on a deserted island. Alone, the boys must learn how to survive together. During the boys first meeting together there's immediately competition between Jack and Ralph for chief. This competition gave the boys the impression that there's a threat; Ralph won position of chief with no history of leadership while Jack had been head boy in the choir for what seems to be some time, leaving Jack in a position he never thought he'd be in.
