For this assignment I choose to attend a Los Angeles Clippers game even though I am a big Lakers fan; mainly because it better fit into my budget and the appeal of watching this young high flying team made it seem like it was going to be a good night. Going into the game it was being dubbed as the “battle of the double-doubles” as the Minnesota Timberwolves led by Kevin Love and his 28 straight double doubles took on Blake Griffin and his 26 straight double doubles.
I had been to Staples Center before for a handful of Lakers games but never had I been to a Clipper game. I was very interested in seeing how different Staples would look and the culture it would create being at a Clipper game compared to Lakers game event though they play at the same venue. Upon walking up to Staples Center I notice a couple things that are already different. There is a billboard with the title Clipper Nation: Rise. There are also a handful of fans that are wearing Lakers jerseys. To me this was interesting to see because people in LA have created this culture surrounding the Lakers that they are clearly LA’s team and the Clippers are just the other team that plays at Staples Center. However this year with the advertisement done not only before the game outside of the arena but also inside the arena during the game to promote this new rise in Clipper basketball. They are the new young energetic team led by the human highlight reel Blake Griffin.
This time at Staples Center they were advertising for the upcoming All Star game so they had posters and booths set up to vote for your favorite players to make the all star game. This placed the team in the third seed of the Western Conference playoffs. Due to their relatively weak record the Nuggets were forced to play the Los Angeles Clippers who, despite their 6th seeding, had a better record following a great season behind their NBA Most Valuable Player Award candidate Elton Brand. Based on their regular season records the LA Clippers received home court advantage. In this recording, Sterling ranted over the fact how he did not want V. Stiviano, his partner, to be affiliated with any African Americans. As a result of his racist statements, fans, athletes, and sports organizations/members, voiced their opinions on the matter, flourishing social media. Sunday, June 19th 2016 will be a date that will lay in the hearts of Cleveland sports fans for the rest of their lives. On this day, the Cleveland Cavaliers finished the nearly impossible task of coming back from being down three games to one in the NBA Finals in order to give the city of Cleveland its first professional sports championship in fifty-two years. The team was led by LeBron James, Kyrie Irving, and company; together, they made history. After the championship many emotional advertisements came out about the city of Cleveland, but there is one that stands out the most. So, with my birth in 1979 in a small town in Kansas, this was the world I stepped into. Naismith, Chamberlain, Winter, and others had been incorporated into a basketball pantheon by the public. They were part of the public consciousness, but only in a supporting role. The game of basketball itself was lifted above them all, the true source of the passion. Before I was ten years old I had seen this passion at its peak. The NCAA Tournament of 1988 turned out to be a great showcase of Kansas and Big 8 basketball. The team I loved, KSU, made an improbable run in the tournament, winning their first three games. This set up a Sunflower State showdown between KSU and KU in the round of eight. The game ended up being a blowout, with KU dominating. KU went on to win the national championship in exciting fashion, beating Big 8 rivals Oklahoma in an exciting championship game. As an impressionable eight-year-old, I soaked up the emotions. The hopes and expectations, the ecstasy and the heartbreak. These feelings stuck with me.
When Indiana Pacer, Ron Artest, charged into the stands with forty-five seconds remaining in a NBA game, last November, between the Pacers and the Detroit Pistons, the shock waves reverberated immediately. Video clips showed Artest pummeling Pistons fans with his fists. Replays also revealed that it was fans, throwing a cup of beer at Artest, which sent the NBA superstar on his rampage. It was one of the ugliest incidents ever seen in American professional sports. Sports fans and non-sports fans alike witnessed the chaotic outbreak of violence from the serenity of their own living rooms. NBA junkies saw the scene unfold during the game's live broadcast on cable TV. Sports fans caught highlights of the melee on ESPN's SportsCenter. American housewives experienced the outrage as they watched their local ten o'clock evening news. For weeks this basketball brawl was not only headlines news on sports pages but it also became the focus of mainstream American debate. Everyone had an opinion on who was to blame: It was the players' who began the brawl on the court and then took it into the stands. It was the fans who provoked multimillionaire athletes into anger by throwing debris down on them. It was the Palace at Auburn Hills' security who failed to bring the situation under control. It was the NBA for encouraging such thuggish behavior from its players and then allowing their violence to take place on live TV. Opinion makers from all perspectives weighed in on the issue. Newspaper columnists and TV talking heads kept the brawl in the national spotlight. Some condemned the incident; some excused it, and some just wondered what all the fuss was over.
