Ethiopian Civil War The Cause “Throughout history, it has been the inaction of those who could have acted; the indifference of those who should have known better; the silence of the voice of justice when it mattered most; that has made it possible for evil to triumph.” was said by one of the many leaders of Ethiopia, Haile Selassie. With this quote, Haile wanted to show that if a problem is not acted upon, it cannot be fixed. In the end, action was what brought Haile’s rule over Ethiopia to an end. The people of Eritrea wanted freedom from Ethiopia in 1861. Ethiopia would not let Eritrea leave and become its own country. Haile Selassie (see picture) was emperor for 44 years until the Dergue took control over Ethiopia. Mengistu Haile Mariam, the leader of the Dergue, became Chairman for Haile Selassie in his plan to overthrow him. Mengistu had ministers loyal to Haile Selassie replaced by members of the Dergue. Mengistu slowly eliminated all of Haile’s support in the government and replaced them all with people from the Dergue. Haile had no clue of anything going on that could pose a threat to him and his position in the government. When Haile was clueless Mengistu arrested him and drove him off to a prison in a blue Volkswagen. In the prison Haile Selassie was strangled in his own bed and buried beneath a toilet inside of his palace most likely by a hitman hired by Mengistu. The Dergue and the Union wanted to remain one and keep their strength in numbers. The Confederates and Eritrea wanted independence because they did not believe in the governments ways of running the country. The American government and the Ethiopian government, both had more control over the country and they wanted to keep their citizens under one set of laws. All sides of the countries were ready to go to war over it and both of them did. In both of these civil wars people fought for what they believed in. The American government wanted to preserve the Union, but as the war went on, they wanted to free all the slaves and have more equal rights for colored people. Eritrea wanted independence from Ethiopia because the Ethiopian government held multiple mass executions, cold blooded murder, and genocidal acts. People should study these civil conflicts so that they don’t make the same mistakes that the people in these civil conflicts made. Civil wars matter most because people must always fight for what they believe in, especially when these beliefs are so strong they are willing to lay down their life so others can live the way they wanted
