Ethics and Professionalism in Nursing The combination of professionalism and ethics can be equated with an extraordinary nurse because they are core components in the nursing profession and crucial to patient trust, confidence and wellbeing. Having a degree in nursing is not what makes one a professional. Professionalism is defined as: The skill, good judgment, and polite behavior that is expected from a person who is trained to do a job well. It is further described as: the conduct, aims, or qualities that characterize or mark a profession or a professional person. Other attributes of a professional nurse would include genuine compassion and caring for patients. This helps to instill feelings of hope in times of turmoil, while neutralizing the sense of fear. Sometimes, no one else is there. Moreover, the nurse may be as invaluable as the next breath of fresh air in rekindling hope and a will to live.
