In “The Great Debaters,” James Farmer Sr. (Forest Whitaker) quotes Saint Augustine and states, “An unjust law is no law at all.” This quote really stuck with me throughout the movie. Directed by Denzel Washington, the movie is based on the true story of Melvin B. Tolson (Denzel Washington), the former English professor of Wiley College, Texas, who coaches the Wiley College debate team. The high school debate team, which consists of James Farmer Jr. (Denzel Whitaker), Henry Lowe (Nate Parker), Samantha Booke (Jurnee Smollett-Bell), and Hamilton Burgess (Jermaine Williams), fights to make it to the top. Along the way, the team faces many daunting challenges: love, violence, and hatred.

The Great Debaters” revolves around emotion. The story takes place around the 1930s, a time where discrimination was all-too-common. The debate team must face the hatred and discrimination of the people in Texas, a state where Texans weren’t used to blacks being free. The movie …show more content…

Denzel Washington, who played Melvin B. Tolson, did an amazing job. The acting captured problems arising because of Tolson, and how Tolson was feeling throughout the entire movie. Denzel Washington had a major part in “Remember the Titans,” which was another spectacular movie with discrimination between whites and blacks. Another great actor was John Heard, who played the hated sheriff. John Heard starred in the loved “Home Alone” and “Big,” both of which have been amazing movies. Another stand-out actor was Forest Whitaker, who played James farmer Sr. Forest Whitaker starred in some of the recent movies like “Black Panther” and “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.” He did a great job with facial expressions and actions, which showed emotion. The last stand-out actor was Nate Parker, who played Henry Lowe. Lowe was a “bad boy,” who went out and drank. Nate Parker captured Lowe extremely well.
