Decision making models are used by counselors to assist them in making decisions that are beneficial for the client ethically. If a counselor faced a difficult situation that requires an ethical decision making, determining the appropriate course to take can be a challenging when facing a difficult ethical dilemma. In the ACA code of ethics, the responsibility of counselors, relating to an ethic or legal situation are defined whereas professional counselors must abide to. A Practitioner's Guide to Ethical Decision-Making Model is a seven-step model that focuses on the standard that are globally beneficial in the ethical decision making and brings a model that can be used by professional counselors (Forester-Miller & Davis, 1996). Using this seven-stop model will help counselors be aware of the clients views and how each step will affect them.
The first step is identifying the issue, as a counselor, making sure he or she gathers as much information from the client to determine if it is a legal issue that as a counselor may need to seek legal advice, ethical issue, or professional issue. How counselors identify an understanding of a problem and what causes it will help finding a solution.
The second step is once you have figured out the issue, refer to the ACA code of ethics to see if the issues are mentioned. The ACA code of ethics (2014) gives counselors a guideline to follow and establish certain expectations of the type of conduct a counselor should be. The third step is to find out the nature and extend of the issue. There are ways to find how such as look at the issue's implications for all of the foundational principles, for example, autonomy, justice, beneficence, nonmaleficence, and fidelity. Clients with diverse backgrounds have a different way of thinking and how they deal with everything. These two models can help solve ethical issues and focus on the social direction and if the diverse client applies the knowledge from the models, it will help form and combine the social differences and help them be aware of the similarities of their diverse background, as it will help ease up tension when making and solving ethical
