There are various factors to ensure that play is purposeful towards the children. Such as play needs to be pleasurable for children they need to have a strong relationship with the adult who they are with. Therefore having a key worker for each child allows the children to bond a relationships with them due to the fact that the key workers are with the children at all times therefore at the beginning of the day they are welcomed by their key worker and accomplish group or 1 to 1 tasks with this person therefore they are able to learn each other’s interest and engage emotions for one another. Another role of the early year’s adults during play is to develop and extend children’s thinking and learning. This can happen with either adult- directed or child initiated play. Often able to engage children to learn new skills and progress within their thinking skills by drawing the children’s attention towards features that they are doing. For example that tower keeps falling down; how you might build it to be bigger and stronger therefore it allows the child to think with support of how to build it to be bigger and stronger. This could also lead onto a conversation of building a castle as a base then adding a big tower on top to support the tower. Through carefully chosen resources adults can create opportunities that might prompt conversation for children to progress within their language and communication, learning and thinking skills. The skills for an adult to do this is for them to engage children in learning and thinking without spoiling it by answering the question or making up ideas for them instead of allowing them to think.
