Recommended: The role of women in ancient Roman society

The common view in ancient societies were often that this was a world of men; that women were inferior. There’s often debate on the role of women in society, but in reality, women play an important role in any type of society, whether it be good or bad. Every society in history have different views and representations of women. In ancient Greece, China, and the Roman Empire, women were seen as inferior to men. They struggled in the aspects of marriage, social life, and education. Although most of these ancient cultures viewed women similarly, of these three locations, it seems as though women in the Roman Empire had it best. In ancient Greece, there was rarely an insight given on women, except that they were controlled and contained, which goes to show the value of women in the ancient Greece society. Women were considered to be owned by the men in their life, whether it be their father or husband; their father controlled them before they were married and their husband controlled them after they were married. The highest point of a women’s social life was marriage, which typically took place at the age of fourteen to eighteen. Although this was considered the …show more content…

They did not have the right to vote or operate in the Government. The society of ancient Greece enforced that a woman’s job was to supervise the household. Since men spent most of their time out of the household working, women dominated the home life. Therefore, the only aspect of life that woman had control over was her life at home. They were in charge of the children, cooking, cleaning and making their family clothes. Often times, there would be female slaves to help the wife do jobs such as cooking, cleaning, and working in the fields. Women without slaves had a lot more freedom, because they had to do what the slaves would be doing in addition to their own work. Because of this, they also had a lot more work to do

Literature reflects the societal beliefs and attitudes of an era and the consistency of these beliefs and attitudes toward women and the roles women play has endured through the centuries in literature. Women begin at a disadvantage according to these societal definitions. In a world run by competing men, women were viewed as property—prizes of contests, booty of battle and the more power men had over these possessions the more prestigious the man. When reading ancient literature one finds that women are often not only prizes, but they were responsible for luring or seducing men into damnation by using their feminine traits.
