Language is a powerful thing. Shakespeare gave the characters in Julius Caesar the power of speech. Shakespeare wanted the audience to know that having great word usage and control in a language can be powerful in many ways. In Julius Caesar, the characters used their power of speech to achieve respect, loyalty, and trust from others. Many respected men in the play used their words to deceive and mislead other intelligent characters. Cassius, through the powerful use of speech, managed to persuade Brutus to join the conspirators. In Act One Scene Two, Cassius tries to persuade Brutus though listing all the flaws in Caesar: Caesar needed Cassius to save him from the water, Caesar fell ill, and Caesar had epilepsy. Due to these physical limitations, Cassius did not believe that Caesar was capable of ruling Rome. In Act Two Scene One, Cassius realizes that pointing out all of Caesar’s physical flaws will not be enough to persuade Brutus to betray his best friend, Caesar. Cassius decides to point out the harm to Rome if Caesar reaches his full power. Cassius then planted letters in Brutus’ home. These letters were written in a way that seemed urgent and from the citizens of Rome.
