“1 out of every 4 car accidents in the United States is caused by texting and driving” (“Texting and Driving Accident Statistics”). The number of accidents and injuries due to the use of cell phones would greatly decrease if the laws were stricter. Many people easily get away with using their cell phone while driving, which puts other innocent drivers in danger. In today’s world, it is all too easy for someone to pick up their phone and send a text while they are driving. Many people text and drive because they feel that a text message is more important than someone’s life. They might not think of it that way, but when someone chooses to pick up their phone while driving, they are essentially choosing to risk the lives of others over one little text message. So many families have lost loved ones because of this terrible habit. The drivers who have cost these families such grief have to live with that gut wrenching feeling for the rest of their lives. Those who have altered the lives of others because they were texting and driving probably regret ever picking up their phone. Before picking up their phone, drivers need to take into consideration if a text message is really that important or if they are able to wait until they are parked and it is safe to answer their phone. They need to ask themselves if a text message is really worth risking their life and the lives of those surrounding them. Drivers also need to be aware of the consequences they will receive from law enforcement if caught texting and driving. If they continue to text and drive without seeing any problem with it, it may take an unnecessary and tragic accident for them to realize how dangerous it is. Texting and driving is after all against the law for a reason. It does not take long for something to go wrong, especially when cars are being driven down a four lane interstate at 65mph.
