William Golding had said that his novel Lord of the Flies was symbolic from the beginning to the end. This book is filled with many symbols that are changed throughout the book. Lord of the flies is a book about a group of boys that get stranded on an island after their plane crashes down and they have to live without civilization. The boys end up splitting up into two groups which are lead by Jack and Ralph. Jacks group is all about hunting while Ralphs group uses their knowledge to get rescued. Some symbols in Lord of the Flies are the island, the conch, and one of the characters Piggy, these symbols meaning change throughout the book.
The island represents a good and evil symbol in the Lord of the Flies. It stands for a new independent life without any adults who rule the children’s life. The boys realized that there is not anyone to get them in trouble or tell them anything after they doing something wrong so; they end up liking the island. So it is like a treasure island at first glance. “This is our island. It’s a good island. Until the grownups come to fetch us we’ll have fun.”(35). This quote is significant because the boys take over the island and they decide to have fun while they are there.
The island has no social structures and no orders given by grown-ups. This is an opportunity for the boys to decide how to build up a new community that is not based on any adults. After the boys’ first meeting Ralph is elected leader. But throughout the novel, especially towards the end, the situation goes up and everything develops into a disorder, mostly caused by Jack’s cruelty and greed for power. You’re acting like a crowd of kids.” The booing rose and died again as Piggy lifted the white, magic shell. “Which is better—to be a pack of painted Indians like you are, or to be sensible like Ralph is?”().
This book was filled with many symbols that changed throughout the book. The symbols in the book were used to signify ideas and qualities by giving them symbolic meanings that are different from their literal sense. The island represented a good and evil symbol in the Lord of the Flies. The conch shell is the strongest and most consistent symbol in the book. A symbol can also be a character just like, Piggy who was symbol of authority, democracy, and civilization. Each one of these symbols changed it is meaning throughout the book.
