Since the beginnings of elementary school, children across the nation are met with multiple standardized tests each year. These tests are designed to measure any given student’s intelligence, and to reflect the strength of a school’s administrators, teachers, and curriculum. However, tests like the Iowa Assessments, MAPS, and even the ACT and SAT do not serve as an accurate reading for a student’s academic abilities. Not only is each person blessed with different intelligences, but a vast number of students simply do not possess the motivation or desire to give their best effort in test performance. To give a personal example, the first time I took the ACT I had such high anxiety and received a score that did not measure my cumulative GPA of a 4.2. The second time I took the test my composite increased by six points. It is proof that one day does not provide an accurate reading of someone’s skills. I also know someone who was one point shy of a perfect thirty-six on the ACT. Due to his lack of a work ethic he failed all his college classes last year and dropped out. Numerous cases like these exist across the country that prove colleges should become test optional, or standardized tests should be abolished.
Standardized tests are not an accurate way to measure a student’s abilities or potential. Each individual possesses unique skills and intelligences. When a student also has a strong work ethic and motivation to succeed, chances are they will, despite their high or low standardized test scores. A student’s future or worth should not depend on a test they spent a few hours on. Instead they should be measured by their accomplishments throughout the course of many years and the potential they have to succeed in the
