Essay On Shia Muslims

As a Shia Muslim living in Saudi Arabia, how would you describe the immediate community that you interact with in daily bases? Do you interact with more Shia Muslim or more with Sunni Muslims?

Since I’m working in a big company in the city, I deal with people from different religious backgrounds, Muslims-both Sunni and Shia-, Christians, Hindus, Buddhists, etc. Of course the majority of the employees are Muslims both Arab and non-Arab. Sunnis outnumber Shia Muslims. At work, I deal with more Sunnis than Shia. Of course, we deal with each other with utmost respect regardless of religious background.

At home, in my small town, all the residents are Shia Muslims so I deal with Shia inside my immediate community. I spend more time at work and

Unfortunately, Some Arab (Saudi) Sunni Muslims grow up hating Shia Muslims. Their families teach them to hate Shia Muslims since childhood. They even warn them not to interact with Shia Muslims if they are going to some parts of the country dominated by Shia Muslims. Non-Arab Sunni seams to me more peaceful, non-discriminating, and don’t care about which religious sector you are from.

How would you describe the effect of the part of the country you are living in on your interactions with people from both sectors?

Growing up in my community, I used to go to a religious school to learn about Shia religious practices. Schools in Saudi Arabia teaches religious practices for Sunni Muslims only and they condemn some of Shia Muslims practices. I grew up knowing the differences between the tow sectors. For me, this helped me to understand and respect both sectors. I don’t hate a person or avoid associating with him because he/she is Sunni. There are good and bad people (and extremists) in both sectors. I treat people with fair and respect because that is how I’d like to be treated in return.
