According to research the San Joaquin valley is leading the agriculture world today, with its biggest crop being tomatoes. So why is the San Joaquin valley so big in agriculture? Well first you have to look at the physical environment of the valley. The San Joaquin Valley is known for the hot dry summers, but also the cool wet winters, it also sits in the middle of California down in the flat valley not up high in the curvy mountains. The next plus side about the San Joaquin valley is the access to markets, look where its located, look at all the major counties you have in it Fresno, Merced, Tulare, Kings, Kern, Madera, and in those big counties you have big cities with access to lots of markets. Economies of the scale just makes sense, think about it, would having one big farm make more or less money than three little farms, it would make sense to have one big farm because you would have less people in charge. Labor is a big thing for farms it takes a lot of people to pick the fields when they are ready and big companies don’t want to pay big dollars for someone to do it. Most reliable cheap laborers are Immigrants from places like Mexico. Industries are separated into three categories today, primary, secondary and tertiary. A quick way to remember each of these would be primary is the raw materials, secondary is the manufacturing, and tertiary is the services. To define them in more detail, a primary industry, is an industry involved in taking out natural resources from the earth. Examples of a primary industry include mining, fishing, lumbering, farming, and oil extraction. So take oil extraction for example the field workers are extracting oil from the earth making it a primary industry.
