Remember the Titans: A Film Review
During a time where racial discrimination continues to impact the everyday lives of citizens, students of T.C. Williams High School come together as one under head coach Herman Boone and assistant coach Bill Yoast to become a unifying symbol for the town of Alexandria in the movie Remember the Titans. Based on actual events in 1971, Remember the Titans is a heartfelt movie about a team setting aside their differences based on color and working on a specific goal, to win the state championship. Each individual player had a different culture, different style, different personality, but the producers were able to use each individual as a way of making the relationships complex and diverse for the audiences to grasp the idea of everyone as equal. When Gerry gets into a car accident, Julius visits him in the hospital as he is the only one allowed to see Gerry. As he enters the room, the nurse states that only kin’s are allowed, in which the famous line from Gerry says “Alice are you blind? Don’t you see the family resemblance? That’s my brother.” This line signifies the color border each character faced and triumphed over, leading the relationships that would last for many more years to come. The one shortcoming of the film is the historical accuracy between what happen to the Titans in the 1971 season compared to the “underdog” team the film portrays. In the 1971 season, the Titans were ranked second in the national overall, which most of their games were pure domination over teams. The film uses the “underdog” view to bring the audiences closer to feeling emotions with the fans, coaches, and players to signify the struggles everyone went through, but the real 1971 Titans were a dominant force in high school
