Research Journal: Professionalism in the Workplace Jessa G. Blumer CPTC: MED-SURG Nursing IV Attitude is the key to professionalism. How a person displays professionalism in the workplace, says a great deal about their attitude. Merriam-Webster’s dictionary defines attitude as, “a position assumed for a specific purpose.” (Webster, 2016). If I were to define what attitude means to me, I would say it is an outline of whom you are as a person. May it be in the workplace or not, how they act, dress, and even treat other people shows what attitude one holds. But attitude itself has two different sides (the good and bad) that distinguishes two different levels. To name a few examples of professionalism in the workplace - is being on time, limiting absences, can communicate effectively, dress in suitable clothes, and shows a willingness to work with others. Having a positive attitude in stressful setting is another great example. Professionalism will show in your actions and people around you will notice it. Once people notices your display of professionalism, you will gain respect and trust in your workplace. However, if you dig deeper, all the examples of professionalism mentioned above, it all boils down into one reason- attitude. It is an attitude to show up at work early, and not miss work. It is an attitude that you can communicate effectively. It is an attitude that you can willingly work with others. But just like anything else in this world, there are professional and unprofessional nurses out there. Yes, you can say that majority of them still has the passion to help others. But do they still have the attitude to stay in this career? That is a question only that said person can answer. Yes, we get good days and bad days. But it is those bad days that decide who we are as a person. It is our attitude in times of hardships that will signal if we are displaying professionalism in the workplace or not. It does not depend on the higher education one reached, nor does it matter what race we came from. For one, you simply can’t dictate attitude. It is something that’s inside all of us. Professionalism will just show on its own if you have the right attitude. And as an aspiring nurse, with the attitude I own, I know for sure that it will lead me to reach success. Also, believe me when I say you can expect me to not run out of the attitude that exercises professionalism wherever life takes
