The first permanent English settlement in North America at Jamestown, was created by the English when they arrived in Virginia in 1607, they did not encounter an inhabited land. The Powhatan Cheifdom numbered 15,000 or something close to the amount. The Chief Powhatan has the given name, which was Wahunsunacock. Now you may ask, who is Powhatan? Powhatan is not a who, but a what. Powhatan is a group of Native American people in the state of Virginia. Although, sometimes Powhatan can also be referred as the leader of this Native American group in Virginia. But when someone is referring to the leader they say the name "Powtitianna". Hostilities and chaos with the colonists escalated or went up under the chiefdom of Powhatan's brother, who sought in vary and with no mercy to drive away the approaching English colonies. This all occurred after the death of Powhatan which was in 1618. What modern historians call Powhatan Paramount Chiefdom, had been decimated by the year of 1646. Resulting in the close elimination and disappearance of the Powhatan tribe, Openchancanough, Powhatan's brother, created big large scale attacks in the years of 1622 and 1644.
