What is love? This question is impossible to answer because there are so many types of love. There is soulmate love, friend love, forbidden love, family love, love for inanimate objects, and much more. According to Adrian Catrons article in the Huffington Post, the more technical terms of love are:
“Storge: natural affection, the love you share with your family. Philia: the love that you have for friends. Eros: sexual and erotic desire kind of love (positive or negative). Agape: this is the unconditional love, or divine love. Ludus: this is playful love, like childish love or flirting. Pragma: long standing love. The love in a married couple. Philautia: the love of the self (negative or positive).

This love is the second type of love that is experienced while growing up. “Philia: the love that you have for friends”(Catron). For many people our first friends are our family so this definitely goes hand in hand with storge love. Once people have gotten a little older and started interacting with people other than family then the true philia love will be found. Many people in their younger years find it truly easy to find philia love. According to Neel Burton M.D. on the Psychology today website “Friendships founded on goodness are associated not only with mutual benefit but also with companionship, dependability, and trust.” Philia love will be stronger with those qualities, “Real friends seek together to live truer, fuller lives by relating to each other authentically and teaching each other about the limitations of their beliefs and the defects in their character[...]”(Burton). When someone finds love they tend to want to keep it around awhile. “Agape: this is the unconditional love, or divine love”(Catron). Agape love goes hand in hand with most other types including storge, philia, pragma, and philautia. In most cases family, especially mothers and fathers or guardians show this type of love towards their children. Children most often feel this unconditional love right away.
