What are performance enhancing drugs?
Performance enhancing drugs, commonly known as “PED’s”, are any type of substance that is designed to help an athlete enhance their performance. These are taken by athletes through pills, injections, creams and other various substances. Performance enhancing drugs can lead to many potential benefits for athletes, such as:
• Increased muscle mass
• Increased blood’s oxygen-carrying capacity
• Increased effectiveness of training
• Increased recovery rate

The most common types of performance enhancing drugs are:
• Stimulants (improves focus and alertness, examples include amphetamines, caffeine, cocaine)
• Anabolic-androgenic steroids (synthetic form of the male hormone testosterone)
• Human growth hormone (assists with cell reproduction)
• Erythropoietin (stimulates production of red blood cells)

The main concern behind the claim that using performance enhancing drugs is unfair is that the ones who use them are accessing a substance that is not available to athletes who follow the rules. All athletes try to enhance their performance in some way, whether it be with the use of sports psychologists, professional trainers, dietitians, superior facilities, training at high altitude and of course, coaches.

Each of these is considered to be an advantage, and also unfair because just like with performance enhancing drugs, they’re not available to all. The real problem is that these factors that can improve an athlete’s performance is that they’re available to those who are wealthy athletes, not everyone. If our issue is that using drugs is unfair, then why don’t we apply the same penalties to other aspects of performance enhancement?
