Obstacles in our lives force us to better ourselves because of the lessons we learn. In April of 2015, I was struck with the realization that I was going to have to learn one of those tough lessons…and I was also struck with a six-foot-long wooden beam to the head. I was sitting on a bunk bed at a religious retreat when suddenly a girl dropped the bunk bed railing from the top bunk. Shortly after, I diagnosed with a concussion. However, this was not just my first or second concussion; it was my eighth. It seemed like I was just cursed with the worst luck in the world -- unable to escape this vicious cycle. Nevertheless, I do not necessarily think that that is a bad thing. Despite all of the negative effects, I have come out better and stronger than ever before. I have learned many lessons, and have been instilled with the persistence to overcome obstacles, no matter how long the journey may take, and no matter how frustrating it may be. My concussions have inspired me to pursue a major in Neuroscience and Psychology in order to discover more about the brain and situations. Concussions and CTE are major talking points these days, mostly due to the demise of high profile aging athletes. As somebody who has suffered multiple concussions, I can empathize with them. My concussions have encouraged me to help those in similar situations as mine, as I understand the lost and confused feeling that they experience daily. I have been forced to work harder than many people just to maintain my standing as a high school student, while also preparing me for difficult obstacles I will experience in my future. I have an especially positive outlook on my concussions seeing as there no point of dwelling on something that has taught me so much about life and
