Expanded Definition of Operating Systems
An operating system (OS) is an essential software that manages a computer. It acts as an interface between the computer and the user such that the computer 's hardware and software communicate effectively so as a computer or mobile device can operate properly. If a computer does not have an operating system, it is useless (Denning & Peter 31). The other programs that facilitate a computer to work more efficiently and effectively are known as application programs. An operating system comprises of system software or the necessary files that help a computer to boot and function. Every Smartphone, tablet, laptop or desktop computer must have an operating system for it to operate efficiently.

It was developed in the mid-1980 's by the Microsoft Company. After it was drawn up in the 1980s, it has been innovated such that there are some different versions which have been released in the market which are more innovated than the predecessors ' windows. Windows Vista was developed and released in the market in 2007; Windows seven was released on the market in 2009, Windows 8 in 2008 and the most recent one, Windows ten, which was placed on the market in 2015. Microsoft Windows are the most popular operating system in the world as it comes pre-loaded on the new PCs of the computer before the buyers buy them. This is because Apple computers tend to be more expensive as compared to other machines. However, many computer users prefer using Mac OS X operating systems over Windows due to their look and feel.
The third commonly used operating system is Linux. Linux operating systems are an open-source operating system which means that they can be developed and distributed by anybody across the world, unlike Windows or Mac OS X which can only be prepared and circulated by the company that owns it (Schatzberg et al. 47). One merit of Linux operating systems over the other operating systems is that they are free to access as well as there is a variety of versions in which a person can choose from.
