Online identity is a term that is used for all that there is found about a person or company in the online environment. Not only a website or a social media profile creates this environment, it’s a compilation of those things that when combined make the online identity. In our current information society the importance of a good online identity has become bigger then ever. How you look online, has influence on how people perceive you in real life. 86 percent of the recruiters will look online for a profile or other information found in search engines before even inviting you on a job interview .

The main difference is that online role playing was all about creation something or someone that you would like to be, and the ability to be this person in an online world, where Facebook, twitter and Instagram are more about showing what is going on in your real life and translating this into the online environment of social media. What we see happening here is the pressure of peers pushing up on social media users. We can see the want of users to participate in a certain circuit and want to come across as lively, adventurous and perfect. Especially your acquaintances play a role in this pressure to present your life in a certain way. Online identity of a person is all about what you look like online, who you are connected with, who are friends with you and with who and where do you hang out. Describing all that you do in real life online with the addition of pictures, places and the friends involved will get you a social stamp. This stamp is seen as an important measure for you, your peers and strangers (like the job recruiter) to decide if you fit a certain role.
