Criminal profiling is also said, to be called offender profiling. Criminal Profiling is defined as “a behavioral and investigation tool that is intended to help investigators to accurately predict and profile the characteristics of unknown criminal subjects or offenders (Offenders, 2014).” Therefore, when profiling an offender some characteristic stand out based off the crime that was committed the Criminal Justice Departments take in effect the offenders criminal patterns and the fact he or she is more likely to offend again.
With that being said, two offenders that I discuss early on in this class was Jeffrey Dahmer, and Andrea Yates. These two offenders were both convicted of murder. Jeffrey Dahmer came from a well together home. He had one brother. Jeffrey Dahmer committed his first murder while living with his grandmother. He killed a gay guy in her basement. He later went on to continue to commit murders in his grandmother basement until she put him out but, only for him to return and continue killing.

When Dahmer was six years old he had minor hernia surgery that afterwards changes in his behavior were reported. During Dahmer’s psychiatric evaluation, Dr. Wahlstrom concluded, “Jeffrey was suffering from a mental illness never cured for” (FBI 1992). This leads me to perceive that Dahmer must have been displaying psychotic traits that went unnoticed and undocumented during his early lifetime. I can only speculate that this uncured mental illness lead Dahmer to develop and refine his inability to empathize with society; which in turn, lead him to engage in cruelty without mentally comprehending the victim’s suffering. Although the causes for psychopathy are unclear, some suggest that psychogenic aspects can outline abnormalities which may be present in psychopaths (Schmalleger 2014). When looking at Dahmer’s distant relationship with his parents early on in his childhood, I became conscious of the fact the lack of affection from his parents which may have lead him to develop twisted views on how one should display affection to others, thus prompting him to show psychotic behavior later on in life (The profile of Jeffrey Dahmer 1996). Even though the letter of the law fails to describe Dahmer and even if he was not fit to stand trial, I believe the court would have declared him fit for trial due to the brutality of the

Criminal profiling requires two college degrees which involve four years of psychology, and four years of sociology for the minimum requirements. This job requires those degrees because you`re trying to comprehend the behavior of criminals, formerly caught criminals, and the mentally ill in order to stop crimes before they occur or stop another of the same kind from happening again. Discussion The goal of this research was to gain insight into the utility of offender profiles in law enforcement. Profiling is commonly used to prioritize suspects in criminal investigations, though it is often criticized due to its ambiguous nature. These elements are victimology, wound pattern analysis, crime scene characteristics and criminology. Victimology is the study of victims. The profilers ask themselves questions such as, “Why this person?” and “Was the victim related to their killer or attacker?” Wound pattern analysis is the study of the way the wounds on the victim were made. Crime scene characteristics help to the making of a profile by showing profilers what exactly went on during the crime. Criminology is the study of the crime, criminals and criminal behaviors.
