The Maya Civilization
From 2000 BC to 900 AD, located in Mesoamerica, the Maya Civilization possessed many successes, especially throughout the Classic period. The Maya Civilization maintained individual states that governed themselves. As a result of individual cities, many things were discovered, such as new ways of farming, math, and astronomy. The Maya Civilization can be divided into three periods, the Preclassic, the Classic, and the Post classic. Through these periods the Maya rose to it’s height, becoming a very successful empire. The Maya Empire was able to gain and maintain power through trade, the development of math and astronomy, and the use of resources the Maya obtained around them. The Mayans were able to use a unique number system, such that a dot represented one, a bar for the number five, and so on (Coe, 40). Similarly, Maya writing was read in double columns from top to bottom and left to right (Coe, 50). These unique developments lead to more advanced tools, as well as allowed the empire to maintain the power they had, for they kept developing new ideas. Throughout time the cities throughout the empire earned many successes and managed to gain a lot of power through their advancements. In addition, astronomy and math contributed to Maya roads as well. Although they did not have many developed or useful roads, there was one road created by the Mayans that contributed to trading and communication. This road was sixty-two and one-half miles long, connecting Coba to Yazuna (Thompson, 185). Having communication was very important, especially for trading and agriculture of the Maya.
