The Maya: They Murdered the Absolute Shit Out Of People

The Maya are possibly one of the best known civilizations of Mesoamerica. They are most popularly known for their highly controversial calendar, which many believed prophesied the end of the world. However, they are so much more than just people who made a calendar. SOMETHING EPIC SENTENCE. I chose my article on the giant Mayan stucco frieze because it showed another side to Mayan culture that was not focused on their famous Mayan calendar.
The Maya are a people located in both southern Mexico within the Chiapas and Tabasco provinces and northern Central America which now consists of Yucatan, Guatemala, and Belize. The whole of the area totals 900 kilometers from north to south and 550 kilometers from east-west. What makes the Maya civilization so fascinating is that in comparison to other Mesoamerican civilizations, the Maya were never really united in political terms. What the Maya had were a series of city-states that were independent from each other, yet united by a similar culture. City states were both small and large; however none ever became large enough to unite the Maya into a single empire. Like all other Mesoamerican civilizations, the Maya civilization can be defined by a series of growth and decline, but what makes the Maya (ADJ) different from other Mesoamerican civilizations is that the Maya people are still around and thriving today. FINISHING SENTENCE.
