A leader is someone who resembles good character and can show the way for others and take them in the right direction for wherever they need to go. More specifically, as a section leader in marching band, it is someone who is able to help their section be able to perform to the best of their ability on and off the field. After interviewing Hempfield Area High School chemistry and forensic science teacher Mrs. Kucherer I was able to expand my knowledge on what it takes to be a excellent section leader within the band. The words of wisdom that she has passed onto me are important aspects of a leader that I want to instill in the trombone section and in the marching band in general during my senior year of marching band, the 2018-2019 band year. In regards to in band, a section leader must be able to show their section how to play their music in and out of sectionals and march on and off the practice all that they can. Mrs. Kucherer has said to me that, “there will be people that will grumble at for instance, playing at 6 AM...but it is the job of the section leader to motivate everybody in the section to why that they should show up and do their part”. To add to that, a leader is someone who is able to clearly share ideas amongst others. Someone who wants to be a robust leader, they should be able to work with others with different ideas to help come to one conclusion and do what is best for the band. “A leader must be kind and not boss others around”. A section leader is not someone who can tell people what to do and give orders, they are meant to give advice and help people become better playing their music and marching drill. With this, they must have a sense of open mindness to the fact that people will grumble and complain, but it is up to the section leader to know what’s right and send a message to those people about why they are in band in the first
