The purpose of my Alaskan King Crab essay is to acknowledge readers about the different types of king crabs and their backgrounds. King crabs pop up a lot in out country and everyone should be informed of their personal details. These crabs are commonly described by their physical appearance, ecosystem, and history. If king crabs are continually being fished throughout the years then they will start to decrease in population because of the amounts being taken. There are three types of the Alaskan King Crabs. The red king crab (Paralithodes camtschaticus) is the most common of the king crabs. The shell either has a bright red or dark reddish brownish color. The blue king crab (Paralithodes platypus) is quite similar to the red king crab besides …show more content…
The first is climate. Red, blue, and golden crabs are all sensitive to water temperature. They like to live in colder waters, but not below freezing. King crabs like the warmer types of cold waters. They can be found in arctic waters that are cool enough to keep icebergs from forming. Around Alaska and Russia are where these crabs are most likely to be found. They also prefer the more sand and mud substrates. Red and blue crabs can be found nearshore during the winter and by spring because this is the perfect time for embryo hatching. Red and blue king crabs show that they go from nearshore to offshore (from shallow to deep), and back. They take annual migrations. The golden king crabs have a very set pattern for migration. They do as the other crabs by going back to shore around winter or spring for hatching, but then go back to the deep-water feeding …show more content…
These females go through an average of 29 days to release these larvae. The blue king crab female will spawn every 2 years, molt, mate, then release about 150,000 eggs. The golden king crab female hold about 10,000 to 30,000 every 20 months. King crabs are often fished or caught for food. King crab fishing crews have specific members that play important roles during the time of the catch. These crabs are caught during the winter months of October through January. "Herring and cod are used as bait to get the grabs into these 700-800 pound steel square pots." (King Crab 101, 1) These pots are covered in nylon webbing and are left under the water for about a day or two then brought back up to the boat. You would think the rate of female population wouldn't escalade as fast as the male population because they are not allowed to be kept and sold to producers, but they drop just as fast. Red and blue king crab populations were dropping to historic levels. In the earlier years, fishery was getting out of hand. The red king crab became one of the most wanted species by fisheries. Their population has been very low statewide since 1983 It got to the point where the fishery crashed and the top four producing areas were closed to red king crab fishing. After this had happened, fisherman had attacked or targeted the golden king crab. After a 15 year time period, 112 million pounds of golden king crabs were harvested.
The yeti crab is a very recent discovery. Nothing is known about its reproduction habits, due to its place of living.
cut back on the problems in the Bay. Scientists have given an unthinkable amount of attention to the Bay of the past several years and researchers from countless numbers of agencies and institutions have dove deep into the issues and studying every nook and cranny to create answers to every politicians’ questions. The biggest concern with the Bay, and the most concentrated ...

In this entertaining, search into global fish hatcheries, New York Times writer Paul Greenberg investigates our historical connection with the ever changing ocean and the wild fish within it. In the beginning of the book Paul is telling his childhood fishing stories to his friends, that night Paul discovers that that four fish dominate the world’s seafood markets in which are salmon, tuna, cod, and bass. He tries to figure out why this is and the only logical answer he could come up with is that four epochal shifts caused theses wild fish population to diminish. History shows that four epochal shifts happen within fifteen years causing certain fish species populations to diminish. He discovers for each of the four fish why this happened to
The location is one of the most critical factors to analyze thoroughly because it helps predict whether the sales of the choosing location will be good or not? Although the Boiling Crab is in the growth stage, it still has to focus on new locations that the owner plan to extend to these areas. As I mentioned in the introduction, the owner plans to open the Boiling Crab in four new locations soon.
Blue crabs have the highest value of any Chesapeake Bay commercial fishery; in 2000, the blue crab harvest was valued at a staggering $55 million (Blue Crabs – Chesapeake Bay Program). For Maryland locals, the importance of crabs during the summer months is bigger than any other issues; summer days are spent at picnic tables picking away at the hard shells of the steamed morsels. During these months, commercial fisherman are up before the sun rises, riding along checking their lines and baskets in the bay in hopes of a good yield of the crustaceans to bring back to sell later that day. In fact, an estimated one third of the nation’s catch of blue crabs come directly from Maryland’s own Chesapeake Bay (Blue Crabs – Chesapeake Bay Program). Therefore, sustaining the population of crabs is essential in the success of the businesses that rely on the income from selling them, and also to the people who consume the crabs frequently. At the same time, the constant pressure on harvesting the crabs for income has created an issue. Since the early 90’s, yield of crabs has decreased, resulting in an increase of efforts to meet the demands of the business of co...
The Chesapeake Bay is a large estuary located on the east coast of the United States. The bay is over 200 miles long and goes through Delaware, Maryland, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia. The bay has much to offer the locals. Many locals have made a career out of harvesting the bay's sea food. The bay's harvest and many of its other attractions bring tourists and in turn revenue for the area. Oysters and blue crab are a big part of the culture in the bay area. However, these organisms are in danger and need help.
The Red Lionfish (Pterois volitans) is an invasive saltwater predator that is increasing exponentially in the tropics of the western Atlantic (Benkwitt, 2013). The Lionfish invasion is causing a dramatic decline in native marine reef species due the gluttony of the lionfish.
From a crab to a barnacle, crustaceans are a diverse group of animals that inhabit much of the world. This lesson will explore what it means to be a crustacean and will also provide some example organisms.

The Chesapeake Bay is a lively and diverse estuary-- it holds our famous blue crabs, oysters, scallops, fish, 87 species of waterbirds, and over 3,600 species of plants. Any impact that we have on the oceans and the bay greatly affect the life and health of not only the bay, but also the many diverse species of seafood and fauna that exist in the bay.
The Chesapeake bay is a home to millions of people and animals. The Chesapeake Bay holds more than 15 trillion gallons of water, also supports 348 species of finfish and 173 species of shellfish, and produces more than 500 million pounds of seafood harvest each year. The Chesapeake Bay watershed spans more than 64,000 square miles.Watersheds are sometimes called “basins” or “drainage basins, home to over 17 million people. The Chesapeake Bay is 165759.24 in square km’. The Chesapeake Bay watershed 2000 years ago was much more healthier than it is now. They had maple, oak, hickory, and beech, and evergreens, hemlock, spruce, and fir plants. The Chesapeake Bay also had many different types of animals. The Bay's waters are dominated by oysters, clams

Species such as the blue crab, oyster, and atlantic menhaden are three main commercial fishing outputs in the Chesapeake bay, but the recent algae blooms are devastating the harvest numbers of several different species. According to the oyster company of Virginia, over 20 million bushels of oysters were harvested every year during the peak of the oyster rush of the mid 1880’s. These numbers
