Internet and children Over the years there has been several arguments on whether or not internet are making children smarter. Internet can be good or bad positive or negative effect. Over the years technology has completely stormed the nation by surprise Over 95 percent of American households use the internet everyday , not including how much we use the internet everyday. Children spend almost seven and a half hours online everyday. Internet has progressed tremendously and some say crippling our kids.(Children and internet 2009) Internet making children smarter. People often wonder how the internet can make children smarter. Obviously we know the internet and the computer holds more information than there ever was in history. This time in life we have cell phones, computers, tablets etc to help us learn. Children use these things for everything to learn and help them understand a certain subject. Adults also use these electronics at their jobs offices and other things. Internet could be very effective in someones life. The internet could make you rich, make you famous, and as some say smarter. Children learn more quicker using internet than they would using books . Computers, tablets and smart phones enables kids to learn new things faster using multiple devices. Learning experts talk about learning styles and how technology helps kids learn faster. ( Does computers make kids kids smarter by Leslie Bennetts) Negative point to Internet and children The internet could also be negative to our kids lives. The internet is very addicting to society. Internet has a variety of negative effects on a person. The largest effect is social. People draw from friends in family , instead they are using the computers to inter... ... middle of paper ... ...ides. We are the deciders and we have to choose how to use it. The usage of technology for over exploitation of resources should be always avoided. If we use it for positive things, it will have a positive effect on our lives and vice versa. Nobody would oppose the development of technologies in any sector but the developments should be in a positive way and they should not have any negative impact on present and future generations. The answer to this argument is simply explainable. The internet can make children smarter if they apply themselves to the technology. The internet can also be harmful , that”s why its up to the people to make smart decisions. We now know internet can and will make kids smarter, and can cause harmful effects. Whether or not we decide to embrace the positives , technology will always increase and not decrease. (Osaretin,Nigeria 2005)
... access to it from various forms of media. Instead of demolishing our ability to read and learn, the internet aids us by giving us rapid information that would otherwise take days of research through books to attain. Therefore, the internet should not be viewed as the cause for our lack of intelligence, but rather the reason for our vast knowledge. Technology has revolutionized our learning and will continue to serve as the prime tool in our education.
Most people believe that the web will increase their intelligence and with a smartphone knowledge is at the tips of their fingers; however, this is not exactly true. Research suggests that easier access to information reduces mental
Views of such technological advances also brought to light that technology has improved thinking capacity and mental dexterity. In The Dumbest Generation? Don’t Be Dumb by Sharon Begley touches on IQ tests explaining what they measure which is thinking capacity not knowledge. Begley expresses that IQ tests have risen and questions whether technology is positive or negative for cognition. Begley's observances on IQ tests and the growing test results do correlate with growing fluid intelligence among today's generation that could be linked to technology. Mizuko Ito et al in Living and Learning with New Media: Summary of Findings from the Digital Youth Project goes into youth creating and navigating new forms of expression and rules for social behavior. In the process, young people acquire various forms of technical and media literacy by exploring new interests with new forms of media. Mizuko goes into detail about new media allowing a degree of freedom and autonomy for youth that is less apparent in a classroom setting. Also mentions that the youths efforts are self directed and the outcome comes through exploration, in contrast to classroom learning that is oriented toward set goals. As an avid internet user I absolutely agree with Mizukos views on new media and the creativity it allows for today's generation. Many people choose to be apart of social
Since the Internet has emerged from society, access to information has been made readily available for anyone to discover. The Internet connects us to the world everyday, whether at work or at home. It helps us communicate with others; via email, social networking, or blogging. With the absents of the Internet, our society would be missing out on a vast amount of knowledge. Therefore, the Internet is unmistakably beneficial for society to use as part of their daily lives. Also, cell phones have evolved from being solely in place for emergencies, to searching the Internet and paying bills. People of all ages are using cell phones, whether for work or pleasure. There are so many technological devices in our society; however, this technology can be misleading. People voice numerous arguments, both beneficial and non beneficial- concerning technologies in our world.
...ttention and focus to reduce the negative impacts on development of children. Research suggests that technology use and especially computers enhances development of children when properly used. On the other hand, the uncontrolled use of technology in childhood education may produce negative effects and impair development in children. Uses of technology in childhood education range from enhancing social interactions, language development to initial computer use skills. It is important to note that, technology use in children education is a matter of how it can be harnessed for the purposes of learning in children. Research by health professionals argues that technology use in children education can produce detrimental health effects especially obesity. Thus, children exposure to technological gadgets like computers and tablets among others should be greatly checked.
Kershaw provides an example of the negative effect of Internet addiction in the article “Hooked on the Web: Help is on the Way”. Mike is a 34 year old man who addresses his Internet addiction problem and seeks treatment. Before seeking treatment, Mike struggled with alcohol and drug abuse and depression along with Internet addiction. He often spent countless hours using the computer to search news and sports information. He never felt it was a problem because he liked it so much and used it in his everyday life. However, Internet addiction started to impact Mike’s life. He became unemployed and lived with his mother. It also affected his social interaction; he would rather be on the computer than be around other people (Kershaw). Another case where computer addiction is found to be a problem is in some Asian countries. Elizabeth Cooney, in her article “Some People Need Help To Kick Their Internet and Computer Gaming Obsessions” reports that “attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in girls and hostility in boys can predispose children to later Internet addiction, which they estimate affects 4 percent of children in Korea and 15 percent in China.” Furthermore, there have been reports of death due to Internet addiction as well. In Korea, a man died because he did not perform basic survival skills such as eating and sleeping for 50 hours due to his Internet addiction (Cooney). In the article “Computer
Internet is bad for our culture and society because we use internet all the time without knowing that we are addicted. It is a drug and it reacts as a drug on us once we start we cant stop. We would have to make it a huge deal because many people don’t know that it is a problem and they all are affected by it.
The Internet has affected our lives in a considerable way. We use the internet in order to connect with society, look up information for work and educational purposes, shop, handle daily errands such as paying bills and so on. Children are not excluded from this, in fact they are capable of using internet more effectively than adults. The reason for this being that chıldren are able to learn to use new technology faster than theır adult counterparts. It is wıdely accepted that having internet connection can be very useful for children, teachers and children consider internet as a powerful tool to access to academic sources to research for theır classes and homework (Ofcome, 2007). Also having the internet is perceived as an good opportunity for children to meet new people and keep up with their friends. This is true if children use internet in a proper way. However, there is a possibility that they can encounter inappropriate materials even while searching for educational information or trying to relax with games. Violent scenes and uncensored sexual material cause serious damage for childhood development, as they can cause children to be aggressive and lonely adults. The first solution for protecting children from these harms is internet blocking and filtering programs. Although they come to forefront by means of their easy usage properties, most of the time filtering programs cannot provide an overall coverage from the internet’s harm. Therefore, parents should have involved in this process by monitoring and helping their children. Moreover media lessons which inform students about the internet’s harm can be very helpful for children.
There has been a long lasting debate in the resent years on whether or not technology has a positive or negative impact on today’s kids. As the years move on, the negative effects have begun to outnumber the positive. The generations previous spent their childhood making forts, fishing, and using their imaginations, contrary to today’s generations who spend their free time texting, playing video games, and watching videos. Damaging effects such as decreases in school performances, addiction to electronics, and lack of brain development have all been linked to the electronic media stimulation. In order to prevent the future generation from following in the current generations footsteps, one must full comprehend just how much technology impacts
A lot of research has gone into understanding the real impacts of technology in people’s lives. The impact of Internet on our life becomes more and more significant and undeniable. Life without Internet is definitely very troublesome and inconvenient. However some do think that this technology is more of a nuisance than useful. Even more complaints have come forward about the Internet disrupting humanity. Over the last two decades people have seen time and again complaints from parents that their children play video games 24/7 or relationships that have been ruined because of a partners inability to use technology in moderation (i.e. Technological addictions). Technological addictions are categorized under behavioral addictions and involve human-technology interaction. They can be passive (e.g. television) or active (e.g. computer games) Internet Addiction does have the core components of any addiction and will be expounded on in this
In conclusion, since technology is exceeding our humanity, humans have relied on technology for everyday use. Technology is also affecting our future generations with providing the ease of doing school assignments without using their knowledge. Also, toddlers today are professional in using electronic devices before they even pronounce a word. On the other hand, children also rely on the use of technology their entire life like a bad habit. In the end, technology lessens a person’s intelligence and thinking skills, because he/she depended on technology rather than figuring it out on their own.
In conclusion, modern technology makes our life more convenient. It has advantages and disadvantages but there are so much more advantages. It is up to us to know what we use technology for, what kind of life we want to live and how to raise our children to technology. Technology makes children their schoolwork easier through the unlimited network. People do not need to travel too often for their work, but business can be done via Skype, and the most important is that everything we do not know easily can be learned from the internet too. Technology is developing fast and there is no way turning back the time. As a tip for parents most likely, since they are the ones ‘’the future’’ : try to interest your children into socializing face to face with people, to read books more often and to go out and explore the nature with friends and family.
It is also shown by studies an inverse relationship between the times spent using internet and daily physical activity. The time spent on the internet and other forms of entertainment media significantly decrease a child’s time for activities needed for the healthy growth like playing, reading, storytelling and spending time with friends and family. It also have confirmed a harmful effect of using internet more than one to two hours per day on academic
One consequence of overuse of internet could be failure to think critically. Some students use the internet to research for their school assignments and papers. They use it to improve their grades in schools and colleges. This could have a negative effect on their brain, they can lose their ability to think wisely and critically which would result in lack of knowledge and understanding. Second, Internet addicted people hardly talk to their families because most of the time they are either on the phone or on the computer. These people avoid going out for dinner or party with family or friends. They often neglect their personal relationships and love to spend time living alone. This can cause damage to their personal and social lives. Some people can lose their jobs because of the unprofessionalism. Excessive use may result in loss of sense of time, organization and poor performance at work. Major life events such as break ups and divorce could happen. In addition, internet addiction can cause physical health problems. Because they sit most of the time on computers, they might develop weak eyes, back pain and sleep disturbance. They become lazy and avoid exercises which lead to disorders such as obesity. At last, psychological health problems such as anxiety and depression may occur when a person is separated from his/her computer or when the internet speed is low and the computer gets
Computers have always been useful, but not until recently have computers become useful for children who are twelve and under. Of course these children enjoy playing games and talking to there friends on the computer but due to new innovations coming out everyday children can now do a lot more then just play and socialize. Computers have brought school to the home. When children come home from school it used to mean school was over but today if you have access to the internet school is know longer over but just beginning on the internet. The internet has special educational sites that children can visit and learn from. Besides that children actually can have contact with there personal teacher from school. A new invention called the “Mobile Author can be used by human instructors either from a computer or a mobile phone to create their own Intelligent Tutoring Systems and to distribute them to their students. Students can also use any computer or mobile phone to have access to theory and tests.” (Source 2, Journal) Homework, notes, review assignments can now be given over the internet by the child’s teacher from there school. “Instructors can monitor their students; progress and communicate with their students during the course.” (Source 2, Journal) Children can learn new information on the internet and they are able to review and get extra help on things they don’t understand. If a child realizes that they do not understand something when they get home, they know longer have to wait to go in to school for extra help, but they now can communicate with there teacher online or they can go to an internet tutoring system which will give them just as much help as being in a regular classroom.
