Model Hippopotamus from the Egyptian Middle Kingdom I visited the Oriental Institute of Chicago Museum, which contains various artifacts, I choose a Model Hippopotamus from Egypt. The hippopotamus is dated to Egypt’s Middle Kingdom, circa 1878 BC. According to wall text at the Oriental Institute of Chicago, hippopotamuses in Egyptian culture represented the enemies of the ruler. I was attracted to the Model Hippopotamus based on its size/shape, lines, texture, and the color. The Model Hippopotamus is small and three dimensional, it can fit in a person’s hands. Small objects and artifacts were popular during the Middle Kingdom. Although, the hippopotamus is small, it does not take away from the viewpoint. The face and front half of the hippopotamus body is gray, while in between its front feet and back feet it becomes turquoise. However, the back-left foot of the hippopotamus is partially turquoise and partially gray. The gray color of the hippopotamus is vibrant, meanwhile the turquoise part of the hippopotamus is muddled. It is muddled because of the black lines, which make the turquoise parts seem like a puzzle, for instance if one removes a piece of the hippopotamus’ midsection between his feet it can be easily be put back because of the black lines. Moreover, the lines on the hippopotamus’ face, the diamond shaped plants, and the hippopotamus’ eyes are also black. The texture of the hippopotamus seems smooth. Additionally, there seems to be a crack where the leaf is near the leg of the hippopotamus. Moreover, the crack shows that underneath the turquoise color is gray. Perhaps the hippopotamus was originally painted gray and then was painted turquoise. Additionally, the hippopotamus looks as though it is glowing because it is shiny. However, the turquoise part is not as shiny it is dull, perhaps because the turquoise color was painted on over the gray color. Sculpturing is all about expression, as the image form has depth as well as width and height; three-dimensional display. Deborah's innovative and intellectual ideas are seen in the horse with its pose and energy; alert and ready to react to whatever comes its way. The form is organized to create the image; each branch represents a part of the horse's physique.
The Ancient Egyptian sculpture, “Statue of Nykara and His Family”, was sculpted during the late fifth dynasty. The sculpture is a depiction of Nykara, his wife, Nubkau, and son, Ankhma-Re. The statue is in poor condition with pieces of limestone missing and chips on the three subject’s faces and bodies. The painted limestone shows the conventional colors for the male and female subjects. There is a clear discoloration among Nykara and his son’s bodies. The brownish red color they once were has eroded to a light yellowish color, which resembles the purposeful color of Nykara’s wife. The hieroglyphs on Nykara’s seat insinuate that the sculpture is meant to be viewed from the front view. This is also evident by the way the three subjects are facing forward in frontal view. There are hieroglyphs on both the chair and base of the statue near Nykara’s wife and son’s feet.
The statue of King Menkaure and his Queen exhibits with clarity the Egyptian devotion of art to a cannon of proportions. Its strictly frontal view point, the rigid poses of the figures, and a faithful accordance to rules and established customs can be interpreted as manifesting the nature of the Pharaoh’s authority over his subjects while at the same time exemplifying the highly regulated, hierarchical structure of ancient Egyptian society. The measured grid of verticals and counterbalancing horizontals, the stiff artificial postures and the overall idealized anatomical shapes of the bodies combined with naturalism is indicative of Egyptian taste for art and a representation of the character of Egyptian culture.
The New Kingdom in ancient Egypt, from 1550 – 1070 BC, was a time of extraordinary wealth, power, and the continuation of the arts in the classic ancient Egyptian style. Characterized by the abstract and impersonal depiction of humans, along with the strength of the Egyptian Empire, the New Kingdom is considered the peak of power and prosperity in ancient Egypt. “Fragmentary lid from the coffin of Wadj-shemsi-su” is a piece created in this time period that was originally part of a portrait located on the top of the king’s coffin. Because the coffin would carry the king’s mummified body in his tomb, the portrait depicts the pharaoh as being prepared for the Underworld, as well as being the ideal body for the spirit of the king to flow through. The objective of the coffin’s portrait is also to convey the power of the kingdom, putting emphasis on the king’s image and the immense wealth that accompanies him. In addition to the piece’s function as a coffin, “Fragmentary lid from the coffin of Wadj-shemsi-su” embodies the strength and wealth of the New Kingdom through the piece’s human face, use of bright colors, and geometric detailing.
Egyptian art is infamous across the world - classified by the monumental pyramids, and the Sphinx. Although these are both valid forms of Egyptian art, they do not make up the entire artistic history of the country. On the contrary, perhaps the most replicated example of classic Egyptian art, from the Old Kingdom, can be found in their rendering of the human form. An interest in portraiture developed early in Egypt. (Gardner, 75) Whether painted on pottery, or cut into rock, the figures all had notably Egyptian characteristics. Between history and showcasing, the Greek and Egyptian are utilized quite brilliantly in the Museum's organization. They set precedents not only culturally and historically that the museum goer can trace throughout the other galleries, but an implication that one can learn a lot about the culture just by observing the very nature of how it was showcased—whether it be the open flow between cultures to implicate a deep connection, or a system of separation to indicate category and purpose—there is so much more to be taken than the mere observation of singular artifacts and summaries.
Chipmunks are very interesting animals. A chipmunk is a small cute animal that looks very similar to a squirrel. All chipmunks have stripes on their face and that is one way to tell whether it is a squirrel or a chipmunk. Depending on their species, they can be gray to reddish brown. It can weighanywhere from 28-142 grams and have the height of 4-7 inches. Its tail can be anywhere from 3-5 inches.

The great sphinx represents a part of Egyptian architecture that highly emphasizes all the different cultural and historical aspects of what makes Egypt a nation till this day, and while it proudly stands tall surrounding the funerary complex of King Khafre it is impossible to ignore all of its secrets, mysteries and numerous counts of research done through out different decades.
