Reason 1: Current gun laws need reform because there are too many accidental shootings involving young children. Children are at risk. They are curious, so when guns are in a home and not locked up, they have a chance of misusing a gun just because they are exploring the adult world. Chief editor of the NLCATP states, “proponents of the 2nd Amendment sometimes even complain about laws that require a weapon to be secured, citing the idea that if your gun is locked up how will it protect you.” The likeliness of an intruder coming into someone’s home is slim. A child is likely to be in the home everyday. A home security system could prevent a break in from an intruder or allow time for the police to come. With the extra time, a secured gun could be accessed. The Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence reported results from a study about states that had child prevention laws in place, “One study found that in twelve states where such laws had been in effect for at least one year, unintentional firearm deaths fell by 23% from 1990-94 among children under 15 years of age.” The Federal government doesn’t have laws about no child access prevention, and federal law does not generally require gun owners to safely store their guns. In 2015 a bill was brought to congress to tighten background check requirements on purchasers of fire arms. The bill failed. Opensecrets.org reported, “The amendment failed 48-50, receiving fewer votes than it did in 2013.
