Georges Seurat was a French painter and an important figure in exceling the neo-impressionism movement. Seurat spent the majority of his life studying color theories and the effects of different linear structures (Pioch). By studying color theories and the effects of (Vora) different linear structures, Seurat was able create his own technique that would later make him famous and unforgettable.
On December 2, 1859, in Paris, Georges Seurat was born. He was the third child of Ernestine Faivre of Paris and Antoine Chrysostome Seurat of Champagne (The Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation). Seurat had an interest in drawing at an early age. Seurat first attended school at the municipal school of Justin Lequien (The Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation). He was then enrolled in the Ecole des Beaux-Arts where he was taught by Henri Lehmann (The Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation). Seurat was deeply influenced by his teacher who was a disciple of Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres (Pioch). Other influences in Seurat’s life included Rembrandt and Francisco de Goya. Much of the education that he received here resulted in his curiosity of the theory of contrasts (The Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation). In 1879, Seurat enrolled in the military. Seurat only served a year in the military at Breton coast. After his service, he returned to Paris (The Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation).
After his return to Paris, Seurat moved in with friend and fellow artist Edmond-Francois Aman-Jean (Artble). The two artists moved to the island of La Grande Jatte in 1881 (Artble). This move served as one of Seurat’s biggest inspirations that lead to the creation of one the defining pieces in Seurat’s career (Artble).

Although Seurat died at a young age, he left behind an influential body of work. Seurat was devoted to making use of the color theory. In fact, he was so devoted that he was able to create his own technique called pointillism. The devotion that Seurat put forth helped the development and use of color seen throughout many artworks today. Seurat was one of the first artists to make use of the color theory and his innovations influenced artists around the world ( The Art Story Foundation ). Seurat has been cited by artists who are interested in the visual effects of color, form and light ( The Art Story Foundation ). Seurat has left behind a legacy that will not ever be forgotten.
