During the Civil War the people ate many different foods from today. A lot of the meals the soldiers ate were cooked over a fire and put in a put. They ate most of their meals like this because they had to camp out and the only way to cook their warm meal was over the fire. Some of the foods they ate consist of meats such as beef or bacon soaked with potassium nitrate. Both Union fare and Confederate fare ate beef and bacon, but only the union fare ate pork. The union and confederate ate similar but different meals and I’m going to tell you what types of food the Union and Confederate ate.
I’m going to tell you about the Union first. They ate all of the same meats that the Confederate ate but they also ate pork. The union also drank tea, coffee, and sometimes milk. They didn’t drink any milk, they drank condensed milk. One of the soldiers favorite food/snack is hardtack. Hardtack is a hard cracker made from flour, salt and water. They made coffee from peanuts, chicory, okra, wheat, corn, bran, acorns, rye, peas, sweet potatoes, and dried apples to make something similar. Some other foods the Confederate ate were cornmeal, dried peas, molasses, sugar, peanuts and sometimes fresh vegetables and hardtack. They had a shortage of hardtack due to little amounts of flour. They would only have vegetables when they were in season, but when they weren’t in season they had to skip them. The Confederates main meal was cornmeal; finely ground corn turned to almost a powder. They used cornmeal for Johnnie Cakes and Cush. Cush is beef and cornmeal fried with bacon grease and Johnnie Cake is a cornmeal flatbread made from cornmeal, water, butter, milk, and
