Recommended: Japanese and european feudalism dbq

The paper is based on the Feudal system which was found in the middle Ages in Japan and Europe. They both follow a number of similarities based on their classes, empire, divisions, ruling, politics and economics. However, there were also some differences being found in the form of economic expansion and strategies being used by Japan and Europe. The paper however discusses the issues and problems being found in that era as well.
Social Feudalism
Feudal Standards in Japan and Europe
It has been seen that though Europe and Japan did not have any kind of contact during the period of medieval, but still they have same socio political systems. These systems are however labeled as feudal. The Feudal system of Japan and Europe are built on the system of hereditary classes. In this hierarchy, the nobles were at the very top, which then included the warriors and then the tenant’s farmers. The bad standard found was based on the lack of social mobility where the children of farmers also were becoming farmers while on the other hand, children of lords become ladies and lords. In Europe and Japan, there are constant warfare that are made warriors in the society and are also the most important class in Japan and Europe. These warriors are named as “Samurai” in Japan and “Knights” in Europe.
Class Division in Japan and Europe
There are majorly four tiers class system being used in Japan and Europe. There is one major difference between Europe and Japan division of classes that this is based on the fact that in European feudal system, the peasants are placed at the bottom while in Japan structure of class; the merchants are placed at the lowest rung. Conclusion
There were however differences and similarities in both; feudal system of Europe and Japan. The Feudal system of Japan and Europe are built on the system of hereditary classes. There is one major difference between Europe and Japan division of classes that this is based on the fact that in European feudal system, the peasants are placed at the bottom while in Japan structure of class; the merchants are placed at the lowest rung. Also another source of economy was the large amount of trade which was coming from the Eastern towns. However in Japan art was the very important source with the help of which the economy started to expand. No doubt that Christianity faced the imprint of feudalism in the time of middle Ages. This was the great change in the history of Western Christianity.

The vassal chose the lord himself, so therefore, the vassal is under the lord's rule and needs to follow the agreement. On Japan's view of feudalism, their feudalism wasn't based on contract. On page 122 and 124 of The Tale of Heike, it implies personal relationships with the lord and vassal. “Despite his predicament, [the lord] still thought of [his vassal].”3 When the lord dies, the vassal kills himself saying, “For whom do I have to fight now?”4 This helps prove that Japanese feudalism was based on a personal relationship with lord and vassal because the lord and vassal actually cared for each other.
